What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a Diagnostics Engineer to support body controls and low voltage power and communication across all our vehicles. This role will focus on CAN communication, power distribution, and exterior lighting, but will also support other vehicle systems, such as doors, trunk, frunk, windows, seating, mirrors, wipers, heaters, steering wheel controls, and other actuators and sensors.
This role is at a key connection point between our Silicon Valley development teams and North American Service Centers. A strong technical background in diagnosing complex electrical systems with heavy software content and deployed in safety-critical applications is required. This engineer must be passionate about the product, a strong critical thinker, and capable of understanding technical system-level architecture and issues.
As a Diagnostics Engineer in the Vehicle Software organization, you are responsible for real-time diagnostic support for the service network (the field), development and improvement of diagnostic tools and procedures, and feedback of top field issues to our development teams to improve current and future products.
What You'll Do-
Subject matter expert and final point of escalation for technical issues in the field related to vehicle controllers, communication networks, and power distribution

Provide diagnostic support to North American service centers for complex issues and work with relevant hardware and software teams to identify root cause

Develop diagnostic techniques and procedures for service technicians and technical support teams

Create diagnostic software tools and automation scripts to assist service technicians in the diagnosis of vehicle issues, fully automating diagnosis where possible

Define on-board diagnostic methodologies and diagnostic alerts, including consideration for third-party shops, and work with the firmware development team to implement

Identify and propose product improvements to hardware and software development teams that will increase reliability, reduce service cost, and improve customer satisfaction

Create documentation on system design and theory of operation for new features to be referenced by global service teams during troubleshooting

Some occasional travel to visit service sites or factories is necessary

Availability for occasional off-hours calls and work
What You'll Bring
Degree in Automotive Technology, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or similar, or equivalent experience considered

Experience in real time technical support or real-time diagnostics of a physical product is a plus

Basic experience in Python; ability to read or interpret C/C++ a plus

Experience with data acquisition, analysis, and processing tools, such as SQL

Able to read and interpret electrical schematics

Prior experience in Formula SAE or experience working on personal cars is a plus

High proficiency in MS office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
Experience with common communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet)
Strong electrical fundamentals; experience working with and debugging electrical circuits
Experience working with complex, electromechanical systems with embedded software

Expected Compensation
$94,520 - $368,628/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
