Digital Content Specialist

Discover Downstate Illinois is seeking a Digital Content Specialist to support the Communications Manager and Content Specialist in executing the organization’s marketing and communications efforts. This role plays a key part in writing, publishing, and managing content across multiple platforms, including social media channels and in-house publications such as the Visitors Guide and Tourism Times. The ideal candidate will help bring the region’s stories to life through engaging, on-brand content while ensuring consistency, accuracy, and alignment with broader tourism campaigns and organizational goals.

Job Title: Digital Content Specialist

Job Classification: Full-time, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM with a 1-hour lunch, Monday-Friday, In-person
Job Location: 4387 N. Illinois St. Suite #200, Swansea, IL.

About Discover Downstate Illinois:

Discover Downstate Illinois is a Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, promoting 22-counties for the state of Illinois. Our goal is to promote tourism to our region, and we do that by marketing events, communities, tourist destinations, unique shops, and more. We are funded primarily through hotel/motel tax which means our goal is to get heads in beds. We act as a marketing agency for our tourism partners and create both paid and organic marketing materials such as print pieces, billboards, videos, and so much more.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, create, and schedule engaging social media content across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
  • Actively manage and monitor social media channels, including responding to comments, messages, and engaging with followers to build a strong online community.
  • Capture and produce photo and video content that highlights destinations, events, and experiences across Downstate Illinois.
  • Maintain and execute a consistent content calendar aligned with seasonal campaigns, events, and organizational priorities.
  • Lead day-to-day coordination and promotion of the Coffee Trail campaign, including partner communication, content creation, and audience engagement.
  • Stay up to date on social media trends, platform updates, and audience behavior to continuously optimize content performance.
  • Assist with copywriting and content development for blogs, email campaigns, publications, and website updates as needed.
  • Ensure all content aligns with brand voice, style guidelines, and tourism messaging.
  • Proofread and edit content prior to publishing to maintain accuracy and quality.
  • Attend select events throughout the calendar year.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Manager and team on campaign planning and execution.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills & Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Marketing, Communications, or Business Administration, preferred but not required.
  • Provide 2-3 unique writing samples (i.e. blogs, articles, essays, etc.).
  • Comfortability with computers and social media platforms.

Pay: $45,000.00 - $48,000.00 per year
