Research Communications is seeking a temporary Digital Designer, WordPress to support the creation and enhancement of online research stories at Georgia State University. This role blends strong visual design skills with hands-on WordPress experience to produce visually engaging posts that strengthen storytelling and audience engagement. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with writers and editors to develop creative visual approaches aligned with story content and brand standards and will be comfortable working within—and building upon—standardized WordPress templates using basic programming skills.

This is an in-person, project-based position located in the Office of Research at 58 Edgewood Avenue NE, 3rd floor. Projects are estimated at 15–20 hours each, with an hourly rate of $20/hour. This temporary position is not benefits-eligible and does not include paid leave.

Day to day responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Designing visually engaging WordPress posts that bring research stories to life through strong layout, typography, and image selection.

  • Collaborating with writers and editors to translate story concepts into compelling visual presentations.

  • Creating and/or selecting graphics, photos, and visual elements to support storytelling and audience engagement.

  • Applying creative problem-solving skills to adapt and enhance existing WordPress templates for different story needs.

  • Incorporating basic HTML/CSS edits as needed to support layout or visual enhancements.

  • Formatting content for clarity, readability, and visual impact across desktop and mobile devices.

  • Learning and applying Georgia State University brand standards within digital storytelling projects.

  • Performing quality checks to ensure posts are visually consistent, accessible, and free of layout or link errors.

  • Managing individual project timelines and communicating progress or challenges with the project lead.

Minimum Skills and Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Demonstrated experience working with WordPress or similar content management systems.

  • Strong visual design skills, including layout, typography, and image use for digital storytelling.

  • Comfort working from established design and post templates, with the ability to build upon them.

  • Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, or other web-related tools to support template customization.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy across multiple projects.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with writers, editors, and communications staff.

  • Familiarity with web best practices, including ADA accessibility standards, link management, and layout consistency.

  • Ability to manage time independently, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain design or technical decisions clearly.
