NMC is hiring a Digital Project Manager, and we're looking for someone who can quickly make an impact for clients. You won't be on your own and you'll be a part of a team who is significantly invested in your success and learning, but you need to bring a positive and proactive mindset to the role.
You don't need to be senior, but you do need to come in with real digital fluency. You've spent time in the agency world or somewhere close to it, or have spent significant time understanding and playing with the web. You know what a discovery call should produce, how to productively translate client goals into digital team actions, and how to spot the design decision that's going to cause headaches at launch. You enjoy working with experts and approach work in a nice, positive, and collaborative manner to help keep things both productive and fun with clients and the internal team. If this sounds like you, more details below!
About NMC
We've been building websites and digital products since 2006. We started as a college startup at UNC and have grown organically through client referrals and inbound sales ever since. Today we're a bespoke and expert team of about sixteen, and we work with everyone from Fortune 50 corporations to local nonprofits, including clients like RTI International, Fleet Feet, UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University, Forbes, International Women's Media Foundation, and many others.
About 60% of our clients are advocacy organizations, nonprofits, higher ed institutions, and associations. They're mission-driven groups doing work that matters, and we genuinely love that part of the job.
We're a boutique firm who works with clients of all sizes. Most clients stick around for years with us supporting them in tactical and strategic ways to help scale their digital efforts. The PM role is about guiding clients from strategic conception through launch and providing such a smooth and informed process that the clients are eager to engage in a long-term relationship that the PM can also support.
Location and Work Style
This role is based in the Triangle area. We're headquartered in Carrboro, and we'd like you to be close enough to be in the office on a regular basis, especially in your first months. For a PM building context on our clients, our process, and our team, in-person time is the fastest way to ramp.
Once you're up to speed, we're flexible. Some of our team is in the office most days, others come in a few times a week, and a handful come in just once a month or so. We'll work with you to find a rhythm that fits, with the understanding that this role benefits from more in-person time than some others, particularly early on.
What You'll Do
You'll run multiple projects at once, each typically moving through:
- Discovery. Interviewing stakeholders, surfacing themes, and shaping a strategy that actually informs the rest of the work. There will be a senior strategic leader supporting this work to start as you learn, but we'll expect you can manage discovery sessions within the first six months of being on board, if not sooner.
- Design. Working alongside our in-house design team and the client to translate goals into thoughtful design decisions. You'll bring perspective, push back when something isn't serving the client well, and flag risks early before they become rework.
- Build and launch. Setting up the development process for success by working closely with the development team on a build plan and making sure they have all the information they need. This role includes the tactical, ground floor work that gets a site out the door, including content entry in WordPress, running client demos, coordinating QA, and shepherding the project across the finish line. We're a small team, so PMs aren't above the work.
- Ongoing support. Many clients keep working with us after launch. You'll be their main point of contact and help them make smart decisions about what to do next.
How We'll Support You
We mentioned up top that you won't be on your own, and we mean it. Here's what that looks like in practice:
- Refined processes that let you focus on the client. We've been launching websites for nearly twenty years, and we've spent that time building out the playbooks, checklists, and templates that get a project from kickoff to launch. You'll step into a thoughtful, documented process so you can spend your time on the clients themselves, not on overhead.
- Pairing with senior PMs. For your first weeks and months, you'll be paired with senior PMs who have years of NMC experience. They'll work alongside you on real projects, share context on clients and our approach, and be a sounding board whenever you need one.
- Internal expertise on SEO, accessibility, and more. You should already have fluency in these areas, but we'll help you level up and get aligned with how NMC approaches them. Our team has built up real expertise here over the years, and it's documented and shareable.
- A genuinely collaborative team. We're a small group, and the whole team works closely together. Designers, developers, and strategists are all happy to hop on a Slack thread or a quick call when you need a second opinion or a hand with something tricky.
What We're Looking For
- Digital fluency you can demonstrate. One to six years of experience somewhere in the digital world. Agency, in-house, freelance, or a mix. The bar isn't necessarily years, but it's whether you can quickly step into a kickoff and add value. Specific notes here would be understanding the underpinnings of good SEO, some experience with Google Analytics, and knowing what good general usability looks like on the web.
- WordPress experience. Doesn't have to be agency work. Even if you've only built and run sites for yourself or side projects, that's a real signal. You should be comfortable in the WP admin and not afraid of block editing, talking about WordPress best practices, etc.
- Recent AI fluency. You actively use AI tools in your work or personal life and have a point of view on what they're good for. If you've never seriously used Claude, ChatGPT, or similar, this probably isn't the right fit.
- An affinity for mission-driven work. You don't need a nonprofit background, but you should genuinely care about the work our clients do.
- A bias toward action. Boutique agency work is rarely tidy. We need someone who can identify what's needed, make a call, and move.
- Strong written communication. Most client and internal interactions happen in writing, and it's important you're able to communicate clearly, positively, and productively with the team.
Bonus Points
- Prior digital agency experience
- Background or volunteer experience with a nonprofit or advocacy organization
- Familiarity with stakeholder interviews, journey mapping, or content audits
- Comfort presenting to clients in live meetings and online demos
- Experience with project management tools (we use Basecamp and Asana), Figma, and analytics platforms like Google Analytics or Search Console
What We Offer
- Competitive pay, calibrated to your experience level
- 401(k) with company match
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and disability benefits
- Generous PTO and a culture that actually encourages you to use it
- An education and professional development budget. We want you to keep growing, and we'll help fund the conferences, books, and courses that get you there.
- Free Thursday team lunches, regular team outings, and the kind of small-team energy where your work is visible and your impact is real
- Company-provided workstation setup
Our PMs come from all kinds of places (politics, education, content marketing, art history, and beyond), so don't worry if your path doesn't fit a perfect template. If you can hit the ground running on great digital projects, we want to hear from you.
