Direct Material Buyer

Job Summary:

The Direct Material Buyer is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and procuring direct materials required for production. This role ensures that materials are acquired at optimal cost, quality, and delivery timelines, supporting the company’s manufacturing and operational needs. The Buyer collaborates with suppliers, internal stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to drive cost savings, ensure supply continuity, and maintain supplier performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sourcing & Procurement: Identify, evaluate, and select suppliers to procure direct materials that meet quality, cost, and delivery requirements.
  • Supplier Negotiation: Negotiate pricing, contracts, and terms with suppliers to achieve cost savings and establish strong supplier relationships.
  • Purchase Order Management: Create, track, and manage purchase orders to ensure timely delivery of materials.
  • Inventory Optimization: Work with planning and production teams to maintain optimal inventory levels and avoid material shortages or excess stock.
  • Cost Reduction: Identify opportunities for cost savings through supplier consolidation, alternative materials, or process improvements.
  • Supplier Relationship Management: Develop and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers to ensure a reliable supply chain.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure procurement activities comply with company policies, industry regulations, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure that materials meet technical specifications and quality standards.
  • Market Analysis: Monitor market trends, raw material pricing, and supply chain risks to make informed purchasing decisions.
  • Reporting & Analytics: Maintain procurement data, generate reports, and provide insights for strategic decision-making.
  • Oversee logistics planning : freight management, warehouse coordination, and import/export compliance to ensure efficient material transportation, optimize costs, enhance supply chain visibility, and mitigate potential risks while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in direct material procurement, sourcing, or supply chain management.
  • Strong negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of procurement best practices, contract management, and supplier evaluation.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, etc.) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing or production environment.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Understanding of industry regulations and compliance requirements.
