The Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research (Institute/IFH), a unit of Rutgers Health, seeks a dynamic faculty scholar and health policy leader to serve as Director of its Center for State Health Policy (Center/CSHP). This is a distinctive opportunity to propel the growth of one of the nation’s foremost state health policy centers that is within New Jersey’s premier public research university.
The Center has pursued its mission to inform, support and stimulate sound and creative state health policy in New Jersey and across the nation since 1999, when it was established with a major grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). Building upon the Center’s successful twenty-six-year track record, the incoming Director will have the opportunity to leverage CSHP’s widely recognized reputational capital and all its research assets to distinguish the Center’s work for years to come.
Reporting to Tobias Gerhard, Professor & Director for the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research, the Director will be responsible for advancing CSHP’s role as New Jersey’s premier health policy research partner while enhancing Rutgers’ national reputation for academic excellence and rigorous scholarship. The CSHP Director will lead strategic research initiatives that address critical health policy challenges, oversee faculty development, and continue to cultivate the Center’s trusted relationships with state government agencies, policy leaders, research sponsors, and a broad network of external stakeholders. They will be expected to secure extramural funding, including large-scale grants from federal sponsors, including the NIH, while fostering interdisciplinary collaborations across CSHP, IFH, Rutgers Health, and the broader University. Additionally, the Director will contribute to the mentorship and professional development of emerging scholars and health policy researchers, ensuring a pipeline of highly skilled, well-trained and enthusiastic academic professionals. The Director will also support the development of connections and collaborations among researchers from different departments and disciplinary backgrounds and the State’s health policymakers and stakeholders.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Advance the strategic role of the Center as the premiere, trusted health policy research partner of New Jersey policymakers and advance Rutgers distinctive health policy scholarly reputation relative to peer institutions.
- Contribute to the research mission of the Center by creating an environment that facilitates faculty productivity and development by supporting, mentoring and partnering with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Expand extramural funding for CSHP research, including developing and leading large research initiatives funded by the NIH or other major peer-reviewed research sponsors, and fostering success of the Center’s faculty in developing their funded research portfolios.
- Promote an inclusive, welcoming and professional environment within the Center and a culture that advances the highest standards of research ethics, impartiality and rigor, and engages with the communities at the heart of the Center’s work.
- Contribute to Rutgers educational and service missions, including the development of the next generation of health policy and service scholars from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
Serve as a leader and contributor to the success of the Institute for Health, Rutgers Health and the University at large, including through the development of rich data resources and the application of innovative research methods to generate insights in the study of public policies addressing health equity and population health.
