Valleywise Health is looking for a dynamic communications leader ready to shape the voice of a vital community institution.
As the Director Communications, you will drive the strategy that positions Valleywise Health as an indispensable community asset, a healthcare innovator, and an employer of choice. Reporting to the VP of Marketing & Communications, you will guide highimpact messaging, strengthen our public presence, and support executive visibility across our public teaching hospital and safetynet system of care.
This is a role for a leader who brings clarity, creativity, and confidence — and who knows how to build trust through meaningful, consistent communication.
What You will Lead
- Develop and execute a comprehensive external communications and executive communications strategy.
- Advance and protect the organization’s reputation across media, community, and stakeholder audiences.
- Craft compelling narratives that highlight Valleywise Health’s mission, innovation, and community impact.
- Serve as a working leader who mentors, motivates, and elevates a highperforming communications team.
- Partner closely with senior leadership to ensure alignment, clarity, and strategic messaging.
- Drive measurable results through thoughtful planning, resource allocation, and datainformed decisionmaking.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, or related field
- Master’s degree preferred
Experience:
- Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible communications or public relations experience
- Proven leadership experience — ideally as a Director of PR/Communications/Marketing or similar role in a healthcare environment
- Preferably 5+ years in a supervisory or managerial capacity
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Exceptional writing, presenting, and communication skills
- Deep understanding of communications best practices
- Demonstrated success designing, implementing, and analyzing PR and communications strategies
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to motivate, mentor, and inspire teams
- Skilled in resource planning, project execution, and managing priorities in a fastmoving environment
- High emotional intelligence — tact, diplomacy, and strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with peers, staff, and senior leadership
- Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and excellent customer service
- English fluency required; Spanish language skills are a plus
- Healthcare communications experience preferred
