Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Director of Accounting is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance functions of the organization. This role ensures the integrity of financial data, adherence to regulatory requirements, and the development of efficient accounting processes to support organizational goals.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Financial Management & Reporting
  • Oversee the preparation and accuracy of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Ensure timely completion of the month-end and year-end close processes
  • Maintain compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory standards
  • Prepare financial reports and analyses for executive leadership and board reporting
  • Partner with the CFO on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to support decision-making
  • Assist in system implementations, process improvements, and organizational initiatives
  • Accounting Operations
  • Direct all general ledger activities, including reconciliations and journal entries
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets
  • Ensure proper internal controls are in place and function effectively
  • Monitor cash flow and support treasury functions as needed
  • Compliance & Audit
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations
  • Maintain and update accounting policies and procedures
  • Support regulatory reporting requirements
  • Coordination with state auditors and Kansas Department of Administration
  • Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff
  • Establish performance goals and conduct evaluations
  • Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement

Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to ensuring the agency is adequately staffed during and immediately following natural and/or manmade disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, and/or acts of terrorism. Assists other employees in the work unit in accomplishing assignments as necessary.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including serving in leadership roles
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting
  • Experience with financial systems and ERP platforms
  • Knowledge of healthcare reimbursement and regulatory requirements preferred
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Effective communication skills with both financial and non-financial stakeholders

Preferred Requirements:

  • Master’s or CPA preferred
  • Experience with government or healthcare accounting and familiarity with Medicaid/Medicare billing or state budget process preferred.
