Job Responsibilities:

The Director is responsible for overseeing and managing master planning and design services related to capital projects and regulatory compliance programs at Howard County General Hospital, Suburban Hospital, Sibley Hospital, and various satellite ambulatory locations (owned and leased) that require periodic support – the JHHS affiliates. The Director makes decisions and recommendations for their designated location(s), which have a direct impact on achieving the Health System’s project goals and established objectives. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in planning, organizing, and guiding major capital projects, programs, and strategic initiatives to achieve JHHS project and organizational objectives. The Director will oversee a team of Medical Planners and Planner/Designers to ensure that planning, design and finishes are executed to align with industry’s best practices and regulatory requirements for a multitude of complex projects (large and small). Project types include building infrastructure, equipment replacement, inpatient care, ambulatory developments, pediatric acute care, and other innovative clinical spaces.

The Director is responsible for ensuring that initial phases of planning and design including master planning, basis of design, programming, and schematic design phases of major capital and/or multiple, concurrent large and complex projects meet JHHS’ project goals and objectives.

Essential Functions:

  • Requires a comprehensive understanding of standard medical facility planning and design, including knowledge of acute care (inpatient, IMC, ICU), ambulatory, healthcare support operations and medical research laboratory requirements.
  • A high level of analytical ability is necessary to resolve complex technical problems, analyze project requests, and scope of planning required to direct work in a large and complex organization.
  • Knowledge of general building and healthcare related safety and regulatory requirements, especially - NFPA Life Safety Code, Building Codes, The Joint Commission, and the Facility Guidelines Institute.
  • Knowledge of contracting practice and language, as well as construction and maintenance terminology and services.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations and codes.
  • Highly proficient in computer applications including Windows, departmental e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint, and Bluebeam.
  • Serves as a mentor and role model to all team members. Creates productive relationships up, down, and laterally within the organization, founded on trust and mutual respect. Inspires staff to meet or exceed expectations with a focus on the growth mindset and continuous improvement.
  • Builds effective relationships with hospital executives, administrators, clinical, and research staff. Ensures that the JHHS mission, vision, values, and stakeholders’ goals and objectives inform how each project is planned, constructed, and delivered. Communicates effectively, sets clear expectations, and adapts to challenges with responsiveness, empathy, and a “get it done” mentality.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Finance, Business, or related field. MBA or related master’s degree preferred.
  • 10 or more years in healthcare facilities including 7 or more years related work experience in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
  • Experience requirements may be flexible if a candidate holds a master’s degree and/or certifications or licenses such as a Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC), LEED AP, Registered Architect (RA), Professional Engineer (P.E.), or other relevant professional certification or license preferred.
