Please Note: The salary range above represents this position’s earning potential. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $62,328 to $75,000, based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

WHO WE ARE

Montgomery County, MD Councilmember Evan Glass (D-At Large) is seeking a creative, strategic, and digitally fluent Director of Digital Media Strategy (Legislative Senior Aide I (Download PDF reader)) to lead the office’s day-to-day social media. This is a hands-on role focused on creating daily digital content – posts, reels, and graphics – that explain policy, highlight the Councilmember’s work in the community, and connect residents to their local government. This role also leads the drafting of the office’s biweekly newsletter and core written materials, including certificates, proclamations, and community-facing communications.

The ideal candidate is a strong writer and visual storyteller who is comfortable working independently, understands how to tailor content for different platforms, and is excited to engage residents online. This position also requires being in the community with the Councilmember, which may include evenings and weekends.

What You'll Be Doing

Director of Digital Media Strategy (Legislative Senior Aide I) Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Councilmember’s digital communications strategy, including daily management of content across social media platforms.
  • Draft compelling, accessible content including press releases, bi-weekly newsletters, social media posts, talking points, proclamations, op-eds, and more.
  • Produce and edit videos, graphics, and photography to support policy storytelling and public engagement.
  • Monitor news and public conversations relevant to Montgomery County and identify proactive communications opportunities.
  • Respond to media inquiries and coordinate press events and interviews.
  • Work closely with the Councilmember, Chief of Staff, and legislative team to ensure messaging reflects the Councilmember’s values and policy priorities.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: One (1) year of progressively responsible experience in legislative/policy research or professional-level experience, preferably with a background in communications.

Education:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree.

Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

To be considered for this position, candidates must complete all application materials including: 1) Cover letter, 2) Resume, 3) Three references, 4) A brief press-focused writing sample, and 5) Two sample social media graphics.

Interview preference criteria will be used pertaining to:

  • Three (3) plus years of professional experience in communications, digital media, or earned media, preferably in an elected official’s office, public affairs, advocacy, or community engagement role.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and publishing daily social media content, including posts, short-form videos, and graphics that tell a clear, engaging story.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with experience producing a range of public-facing materials such as newsletters, certificates, proclamations, talking points, and general correspondence.
  • Proficiency with digital content tools, including Canva and video editing platforms.
  • Strong editorial judgment and ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and respectfully in a public-facing role.
  • Passion for local news, social media, and community conversations to help identify timely and relevant engagement opportunities.
  • Experience supporting or coordinating media inquiries and press activities, as needed.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to ensure messaging aligns with policy priorities and ongoing work.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
