Director of Engineering, Digital Consumer Products

Director of Engineering, Digital Consumer Products

Location: Remote (hybrid team with presence in Lincolnshire, IL)

Reports To: Senior Director of Digital Engineering

Direct Reports: Engineering Managers, QA Manager

Team Size: 5–15 (engineers, QA, managers)

Role Overview

Camping World is seeking a Director of Engineering, Digital Consumer Products to lead engineering and QA teams across our consumer-facing digital portfolio, including RV and retail eCommerce.

You will own the technical direction and delivery of modern, scalable digital experiences supporting the full lifecycle of RV ownership—from discovery and purchase to service and long-term engagement. Core product areas include RV search and lead generation, eCommerce browsing and purchase flows powered by Salesforce Commerce Cloud, and service flows.

This is a strategic leadership role with deep architectural involvement. You will lead primarily through managers, but are expected to contribute to architecture decisions, review code and PRs, and occasionally roll up your sleeves to write code when the situation calls for it. A defining aspect of this role is leading the adoption of AI-powered development tools and practices—helping your teams leverage AI coding assistants and AI-driven testing tools to materially improve development speed and quality.

Key Responsibilities

AI-Augmented Engineering Practices

  • Champion the adoption of AI coding assistants (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code) across engineering teams, establishing workflows that measurably improve development velocity and code quality.

  • Evaluate and integrate AI-powered testing and QA tools into the development lifecycle, improving test coverage and defect detection.

  • Build a culture of experimentation around AI tooling—setting learning goals, running pilots, measuring outcomes, and scaling what works.

  • Stay current on emerging AI development tools and practices, serving as the team’s primary advocate and educator for AI-enhanced workflows.

Engineering Leadership & Delivery

  • Lead engineering teams responsible for delivering consumer-facing digital products across web experiences, including:

    • RV search, browsing, and lead generation flows

    • Retail eCommerce search, browsing, and purchase capabilities (Salesforce Commerce Cloud)

    • Service flows (service scheduling, service status)

  • Collaborate with Product Management to align on roadmaps, priorities, and trade-offs.

  • Own the end-to-end software development lifecycle, from architecture and design through development, testing, deployment, and ongoing optimization.

  • Drive predictable, high-quality delivery through strong planning and prioritization.

  • Ensure strong incident management, monitoring, and continuous improvement processes.

Technical Strategy & Architecture

  • Define and evolve the technical architecture to support an integrated, omnichannel customer experience across a hybrid infrastructure (Vercel, Azure/AKS, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Heroku – legacy apps).

  • Drive modernization efforts, including cloud migration, API development, microservices adoption, and platform scalability.

  • Contribute directly to architecture decisions and participate in code/PR reviews to maintain technical standards.

  • Establish and enforce best practices for system design, code quality, testing, and observability.

  • Ensure systems are designed for performance, security, resilience, and extensibility.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Product Management to translate business objectives into technical execution plans.

  • Collaborate with Marketing and SEO teams to ensure site performance, discoverability, and campaign support.

  • Work with Data and Analytics teams to support measurement, experimentation, and data-informed product decisions.

  • Coordinate with IT and Infrastructure teams on platform reliability, security, and shared services.

  • Build toward eventual ownership of website tagging and tracking capabilities (Google Tag Manager, GA4, Segment), including hiring and developing a dedicated team.

People Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineering managers and engineers across a hybrid remote/in-office structure.

  • Build a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

  • Provide light guidance and strategic direction to the QA Manager, who operates with significant autonomy.

  • Drive hiring, retention, and development of top engineering talent.

  • Establish clear goals, career paths, and performance expectations for team members.

Qualifications

Required

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with 5+ years in engineering leadership roles.

  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and building structure as you go — this is a dynamic environment where you'll help define the playbook, not just follow one.

  • Proven experience leading teams that build and scale consumer-facing digital products, particularly in eCommerce or digital platforms.

  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar) and a demonstrated ability to drive adoption across engineering teams.

  • Strong technical expertise in modern web architectures, including React/Next.js, Node.js, and cloud-native systems.

  • Experience working with hybrid cloud infrastructure (e.g., Vercel, Azure, AKS, or comparable platforms).

  • Experience delivering complex systems that support transactional workflows and high-traffic user experiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop engineering managers and high-performing teams.

  • Strong collaboration skills and experience working closely with product management and cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Experience managing remote or distributed engineering teams.

Preferred

  • Experience in eCommerce/retail or automotive/dealership industries.

  • Experience with Salesforce Commerce Cloud (SFCC) as a backend platform.

  • Familiarity with website analytics and tagging tools (Google Tag Manager, GA4, Segment).

  • Experience with AI-powered testing and QA automation tools.

  • Understanding of SEO principles and their implications for web platform architecture.

  • Experience migrating legacy systems (e.g., Heroku) to modern cloud platforms.
