Director of Financial Operations

DIRECTOR OF FINANCIAL OPERATIONS

Excavation & Site Development

Full-Time | On-Site | Competitive Compensation

THE OPPORTUNITY

This is not a back-office accounting role. We are looking for a hands-on financial leader who operates shoulder-to-shoulder with field operations, project managers, and division leads to drive profitability, not just report on it.

As our Director of Financial Operations, you will be embedded across every division of a growing excavation and site development company. You will be equally comfortable reviewing a WIP schedule at your desk, walking a job site in steel toes, or presenting margin analysis to the leadership team. Your financial insight will directly shape how we bid, build, and grow.

If you are the kind of finance professional who would rather find cost leakage on a live project than reconcile a bank statement, this is your role.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

Operational Financial Leadership

  • Attend project kickoffs, pre-bid reviews, and division-level P&L meetings as a financial partner, not a spectator
  • Conduct regular financial reviews with project managers and division leads, translating numbers into operational decisions
  • Provide real-time financial insight on bidding strategy, equipment ROI, and pricing decisions before commitments are made
  • Identify cost leakage, margin erosion, and operational waste across all divisions and drive corrective action

Job Costing & Project Financial Management

  • Own and continuously improve job costing systems across all excavation and site development projects
  • Track and analyze project costs (labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors) against budget in real time
  • Monitor WIP, over/under billing, retention, and project margins with a focus on early detection and course correction
  • Review subcontractor and vendor invoices for accuracy, contract compliance, and cost alignment
  • Partner with PMs to forecast project outcomes, flag risks early, and protect margins before problems become losses

Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations

  • Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and month-end/year-end close
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements with accuracy and timeliness
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and construction industry requirements
  • Maintain strong internal controls and support audits and external reporting requirements

Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Flow Management

  • Lead company-wide and project-level budgeting and rolling forecasts for revenue, costs, and cash flow
  • Monitor performance against budgets with variance analysis that includes actionable recommendations, not just numbers
  • Manage cash flow, billing cycles, retainage, and collections to maintain operational liquidity

Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff through hands-on daily involvement, not delegation from a distance
  • Collaborate daily with operations, project managers, estimators, and leadership across every division
  • Continuously improve financial systems, reporting, and processes for speed, accuracy, and operational relevance

WHO YOU ARE

You are a finance professional who gets restless sitting behind a desk all day. You want to understand the business at the ground level and use that knowledge to make better financial decisions. You bring:

  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred but not required if you bring the right experience)
  • 5-7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, ideally in construction, excavation, heavy civil, or a related field-driven industry
  • Deep expertise in job costing, WIP reporting, and construction accounting, not just textbook knowledge, but battle-tested experience
  • Hands-on experience with construction ERP or accounting systems (Sage, Viewpoint, Foundation, ProCore, or similar)
  • A track record of improving project margins, identifying cost leakage, or driving financial process improvements, not just maintaining the status quo
  • The ability and willingness to operate in a fast-paced, field-driven environment where plans change, conditions shift, and flexibility is essential
  • Strong financial analysis skills and advanced proficiency with reporting and data tools
  • Communication skills that translate financial complexity into plain language for PMs, operators, and leadership

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Competitive compensation based on experience
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Company-paid life and short-term disability insurance
  • 401(k) with company match

  • On-site employee gym
  • State-of-the-art equipment and repair facility
  • Team-building events and continued education/training
  • Generous PTO and paid holidays
