Job Description

At the Washington Waldorf School, we encourage the connections that broaden students’ experiences and help them grow in new directions. We are a co-educational, Pre-K through 12 independent school offering a Waldorf based education. As the Director of Human Resources, you will be responsible for supporting the school’s mission and strategy by supporting and protecting the school’s faculty, administration, and staff. This position will provide high-quality professional service in the areas of employee relations, benefits, compensation, compliance, payroll, diversity, and strategy. This position reports to the Head of School.

You will thrive here if you are a hands-on professional who demonstrates respect, honesty, and integrity while also being able to deliver hard messages when needed. You should also be methodical and process-oriented. Your experience as a hands-on HR generalist in a small to medium-sized school or non-profit is valuable. Human Resources professional certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP) is desired.

The Director of HR will:

  • Determine and administer employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employment relationship and promote a high level of employee morale
  • Administer the school’s personnel policies, procedures, and practices in accordance with federal, state and local requirements.
  • Provide counsel to employees, managers, and the administrative team on employment laws and internal procedures
  • Manage and process biweekly payroll
  • Develop and coordinate recruitment and retention activities
  • Investigate and follow through on formal complaints
  • Monitor unemployment claims and appeal when necessary
  • Identify and recommend human resources strategies to the administrative team
  • Oversee job descriptions, performance evaluations, and compensation programs
  • Oversee recruitment lifecycle
  • Provide training for department heads and team leaders on various HR topics, including interviewing skills, performance reviews, and employee coaching.
  • Manage Worker’s Compensation program and case management

Experience/Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR or related field
  • Ten years of progressive experience in human resources.
  • Professional certification in Human Resources is strongly desired. (SPHR, PHR, SHRM-CP)
  • Working knowledge of HR laws and compliance
  • Proficiency with Paycor or a similar HRIS system
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of personnel administration and labor law
  • Ability to work with highly confidential information
  • Ability to accurately interpret procedures and regulations along with the ability to ensure appropriate implementation
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
