Director of Human Resources

General Description: The Director of Human Resources is the primary leader responsible for overseeing all aspects of human resources management, including talent acquisition, employee development and retention, compensation and benefits, leave management, and performance management. The Director of Human Resources must have exceptional leadership skills, a deep understanding of HR best practices, and the ability to drive strategic HR initiatives that align with the Company’s mission, vision, and values. The Director of Human Resources will work collaboratively with the legal department, executive committee, and ThompsonGas workforce to develop and execute policies and practices and will provide strategic and complex professional support to the Human Resources team.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provides strategy leadership and direction to the Human Resources team by selecting, training, motivating, counseling, and evaluating personnel, while developing a high-performing team capable of executing strategic HR priorities and monitoring industry trends and innovations.
  • Directs and maintains regulatory compliance in each of the following areas and provides management and oversight of recruitment and selection, onboarding, employee credentials, talent management, employee training and development, new position analysis and classification, employee relations, benefit administration, employment and regulatory compliance, performance evaluation, budget and compensation analysis, maintenance and communication of records required by law, Workers' Compensation, FMLA/ADA reviews, accreditation requirements and other associated functions.
  • Collaborates with Company personnel to develop budget planning, project staffing projections, and resource allocations for Human Resources team.
  • Provides oversight of Human Resources payroll operations and partners with Compensation and Benefits teams to facilitate accurate and timely employee compensation and benefit processing in compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Leads collaborative, Company-wide initiatives that enhance operational effectiveness and strengthen the Company’s ability to support and advance its mission, vision, and values.
  • Prepares communications to relevant workforce on projects, changes, and pertinent information.
  • Oversees and manages critical federal and state reporting, complex surveys and data requests related to human resources for internal planning, regulatory compliance, and external reporting entities.
  • Ensures that Human Resources policies, procedures and practices comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations in partnership with legal department.
  • Collaborates with talent acquisition to maintain efficient processes for onboarding and hiring of employees and to enhance talent acquisition, organizational integration, and long-term retention.
  • Collaborate with customer experience and safety teams to maintain and enhance employee training, reporting, resources, tools, development programs, and administers employee compensation and incentive plans.
  • Develops and maintains systems and processes for conflict management, complaint resolution, and employee investigation – ensuring fairness, consistency, and risk mitigation.
  • Supervises the appropriate resolution of employee relations issues and investigations of employee discriminatory complaints and/or charges; represents the Company as needed for hearings and investigations, and responsible for the analysis, maintenance, and communication of records required by law or local governing bodies.
  • Responsible for the development of a staffing, retention, and recruiting plan, and for maintaining an up-to-date and accurate plan throughout the fiscal year.
  • Oversees benefits administration, including but not limited to insurance plans, retirement plans, optional employee benefits, Workers' Compensation, and leave accruals and balances.
  • Partnering with IT, maintains and improves current HRIS business processes and analytics and supervises HRIS functions. Ensures the integrity of employee data and security roles.
  • Coordinates assigned activities and serves as the principal Human Resources liaison to other Company departments and external agencies, fostering collaborative partnerships at all levels of the organization that support overall operational effectiveness.
  • Oversees employee compensation, including salary surveys, position reclassifications and leveraging market benchmarking to recommend and maintain competitive pay scales.
  • Continuously analyze and develop and maintain knowledge of policies in the areas of Human Resources and talent development and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Leads and handles special projects and strategic initiatives assigned by senior leadership, addressing complex organizational challenges and advancing operational priorities.
  • Travel throughout the United States as needed.
  • Utilizes data and analytics to measure HR effectiveness and inform strategic decisions.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to address workforce planning, succession planning, and organizational development needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or a related field is required; a Master’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • At least eight (8) years of advancing management/leadership experience in human resources and specifically oversight of a human resources department, is required; over ten (10) years of advancing management/leadership experience in managing a human resources team is preferred.
  • Prior experience in gas or energy industries is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) required.
  • Strong computer and proficiency with Microsoft suite applications required.
  • Knowledge of employment and wage and hour laws and compliance requirements.


Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR) / Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and/or Society of Human Resource Management – Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) / Society of Human Resource Management – Senior Certified Professional (SRM-SCP) certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of selection, training, and supervision of personnel.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and commitment to confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated experience with the implementation of computer-based HRIS systems, analyses and related technology.
  • Evidence of commitment to collegiality, professional development, and integration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of compensation, benefits, and performance appraisal administration.
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in general employment law and hearing procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement policy and procedures.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and internet research skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects that require demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action.
  • Team player with the ability to collaborate with all departments, functions, and other support services.
  • Ability to adapt to constant change and periods of fast-paced, high-intensity work situations.
  • Occasional evening and/or weekend availability as needed based on business needs; willing to travel throughout the United States.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving the mission, vision and values of ThompsonGas.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from executive team, senior leaders, and workforce.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.


Physical Requirements:

  • Work primarily in an office environment with a regular work schedule as determined by manager. May be required to report earlier or work later for specific tasks or events.
  • Regular prolonged periods of sitting.
  • Regular engagement in repetitive motions, such as keyboarding for data entry and use of office equipment at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to view computer screens for extended durations while being capable of navigating menus and screens and adjusting focus as needed.
  • Occasional lifting or moving of objects, such as books and files weighing up to 30 pounds.

The intended base pay range for this role is $140,000 to $170,000. The actual base pay offered may vary based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to job-related qualifications (such as knowledge, skills, education, and experience), location, and/or schedule. Depending on the position offered, incentive plans, bonuses, and/or other forms of compensation may be offered.
