Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach more than 1,400 individuals every day across 10 campuses in Charlotte.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Communications and Marketing is a strategic leader responsible for developing, executing, and continuously refining a comprehensive communications program that advances Roof Above’s mission and elevates its visibility, voice, and impact. This role oversees all aspects of internal and external communications, including marketing, brand management, content development, print and digital communications, media relations, and crisis communications — ensuring consistency, clarity, and alignment across all channels.

Working in close partnership with Philanthropy leadership and the CEO, the Director of Communications and Marketing sets and drives the organization’s communications strategy, aligning it with fundraising priorities, programmatic goals, and community engagement efforts. This position plays a critical role in supporting philanthropic growth, including leadership of communications strategies for key initiatives, such as the Spring and Year-End campaigns and the annual True Blessings luncheon.

The Director of Communications and Marketing leads and develops the Communications team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability. Additionally, this role supports broader organizational efforts in community education and advocacy, helping to deepen public understanding of homelessness and inspire meaningful engagement with Roof Above’s work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Lead the strategy, design, and execution of all print and digital communications, including the website, newsletters, email campaigns, blogs, fundraising appeals, and organizational collateral
  • Develop and implement integrated marketing strategies that strengthen brand awareness and elevate Roof Above’s online and community-wide visibility
  • Establish and manage communication channels that build momentum, engage key audiences, and measure the effectiveness of each effort
  • Manage efforts to develop a robust story bank that includes content that represents all Roof Above locations, staff, volunteers, and neighbors we serve
  • Oversee and maintain core communications assets, including brand standards, photography and video libraries, and crisis communication plan
  • Lead, manage, and develop the Communications Team, fostering a culture of accountability, creativity, excellence, and philanthropy. Provide direct supervision and leadership to the Creative Communications Manager and the Marketing & Communications Manager
  • Partner closely with the Philanthropy Team to support fundraising strategies, including the Spring and Year-End campaigns, True Blessings, and donor stewardship efforts
  • Manage relationships with external vendors supporting graphic design, web development, video production, printing, and signage to ensure high-quality and timely deliverables
  • Oversee internal communications to ensure alignment, clarity, and consistency across the organization
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for media relations, including building and managing press relationships
  • Prepare and support senior leadership for media engagement and lead communications strategy during crisis situations

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a senior member of the Philanthropy Team, member of Roof Above’s Extended Leadership Team, and communications liaison to all other departments
  • Support staff training and meetings and perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, marketing, or related discipline strongly preferred
  • Minimum of four years of experience in marketing communications, writing content, and development
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
  • Strong ability to transform knowledge into useful messages and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels
  • Highly collaborative style with sincere commitment to work with all constituent groups
  • Ability to manage a variety of initiatives concurrently
  • Self- starter who can work independently and enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Passion for the mission of Roof Above and commitment to core values
  • Comfortable in multiple settings
  • Experience working with various stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, donors, and those we serve

The Roof Above Philanthropy team raises more than $10 million each year, across thousands of community supporters, to sustain the programs and services that help our neighbors experiencing homelessness move toward stability and housing. Through strong partnerships with individuals, congregations, corporations, and foundations across the region, the team mobilizes broad community support and engagement.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The Philanthropy Team’s offices are located at the Day Services Center.

Position requires working evening and weekends as needed.
