Director of Marketing - Litigation

Cooley is seeking a Director of Marketing - Litigation to join the Marketing and Business Development team.
Position summary: Under the supervision of the Director of Client Development, the Director of Marketing - Litigation will work closely with their assigned department and practice group chairs, firm attorneys and other marketing and business development team members to lead all client development and marketing activities for the Litigation department. The primary goals are to drive revenue, relationships and brand through new business opportunities and client expansion programs, including client targeting and cross-sell initiatives, thought leadership, events and sponsorships, digital interactions, pitches and proposals, and client development coaching and training. This leadership position oversees a large marketing team. Effective development and guidance of the marketing team is essential to success in this role. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Position responsibilities:
Strategic direction:
  • In conjunction with the Director of Client Development, department and practice group leaders and firm leadership, develop and execute marketing and client development plans for the Litigation department and assigned practice group(s) that result in measurable growth of business for the firm, with emphasis on retention and service expansion to existing clients, as well as cultivation of new clients for the firm
  • Identify targets and support programs, events, sponsorships, content creation and distribution, etc., to drive revenue from identified targets while both enhancing the department’s brand and the overall client experience.
  • Identify trends in marketplace and respond with marketing strategy recommendations
  • Guide department and practice-specific marketing strategies and tactics
  • Work with other marketing and business development leaders to develop and execute strategy across the firm
  • Serve as liaison between lawyers and other marketing functions
  • Work closely with the Innovation and Technology teams to utilize emerging technologies to both create efficiency in team operations and to provide real-time insights to other marketers and the business
  • Communicate strategies and tactics to ensure implementation and coordination across practices and geographies
  • Coordinate effectively with business development team on in-market activities
  • Advise on marketing orientation for new arrivals including lateral partners with a focus on client portability, retention and practice expansion
Management and operations
  • Set the tone for service, knowledge and operational excellence. Ensure adherence to standards of excellence across the Litigation marketing team
  • Provide leadership, guidance and mentoring to attorneys and staff through effective communication ensuring a well-informed and highly motivated team effort
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues across functions and levels to advance goals and projects
  • Serve as a role model for the use of CRM and other marketing technology tools in managing the sales pipeline and for practice group business development
  • Create an annual budget and marketing plan, managing marketing functions to achieve goals within budgetary guidelines
  • Encourage the development of strong working relationships across the firm
Client development:
  • Work with the partners to develop and maintain client relationships, identifying and prioritizing specific client opportunities and analyzing performance within the context of the firm’s overall client development strategy
  • Effectuate cross-selling between practice groups and among regions and offices
  • Leverage sales pipeline information. Establish accurate reporting and forecasting systems for the tracking of business development
  • Develop selling methods/strategies that lead to measurable, competitive advantages for the firm
  • Effectively articulate the value proposition of firm’s services to specifically targeted clients
Programs and visibility initiatives:
  • Work with marketing business development and litigation team to execute events, programs and pitches and RFP responses
  • Manage litigation sponsorships and activities tied to local and global industry and business organizations
  • Working with the business development and communications teams, identify and support content creation, networking, speaking and media opportunities for attorneys that support practice group business plans
Supervisory:
  • Serve as direct supervisor and mentor to direct reports; ensure strong leadership for junior support team members via coaching and mentoring of direct reports
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of direct reports, ensure compliance with assigned work hours and monitor for compliance with all firm and department policies. Manage staffing coverage, review and process time logs/time off requests
  • Support business professional development and continued educational opportunities
  • In collaboration with immediate supervisor and CN HR, participate in hiring, performance appraisals, counseling, termination and other employee lifecycle events
  • All other duties as assigned or required
Skills and experience:
Required:
  • After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications
  • Ability to work extended and/or weekend hours, as required
  • Ability to travel, as required
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10+ direct of sales and/or marketing experience at a management level, preferably in a professional services organization, with proven ability to manage, coach and motivate
  • 5+ years of management experience in relevant roles and with proven track record of effective leadership
  • Proficient in the use of CRM and other marketing technologies
Preferred:
  • MBA or advanced degree in a related field and significant prior experience in marketing or sales
  • Experience in a professional services environment
  • Experience managing a large team of reports
  • Experience develop a strategy and managing a team across the US and international locations
  • Experience in both performance and brand marketing

The expected annual pay range for this position with a full-time schedule is $275,000 - $345,000. Please note that final offer amount will be dependent on geographic location, applicable experience and skillset of the candidate.
