Starr King Unitarian Universalist Church is a welcoming and inclusive spiritual community committed to justice and equity. Religious education encourages our children to discover their authentic selves.
Job Overview
The Director of Religious Education collaborates with the Minister, Board of Trustees, Family Ministry Committee and congregation to direct a program that encourages age-appropriate learning and development for children, youth and families, while fostering relationships among people of all ages. The ideal candidate will fully support religious pluralism and the LBGTQ+ community, especially our queer youth.
Work Schedule
Part-time 20 hours/week, on site and remote. Actively participate in classes at least three Sunday mornings per month.
Essential Functions
- Recruiting, training, and supervising leaders and assistants for Sunday morning classes.
- Coordinating with the minister and the congregation in choosing and carrying out a congregational learning theme for each year.
- Coordinating the content of and participating in classes.
- Working with the minister and other committees of the church to create bridges between children’s programs and other parts of the life of the congregation (e.g. connections with the Peace and Justice Action Team).
- Ensuring that content materials of all Religious Education workshops, gatherings, and activities are consistent with Unitarian Universalist values.
- Using e-mail, digital photography, and social media to cultivate and maintain relationships with families, including a weekly email to families.
- Working with the minister to create and lead intergenerational worship services and creating space for children and youth to participate and lead.
- Maintain a commitment to a diverse and intergenerational program.
- Attending and participating in the Family Ministry Committee meetings and events.
- Participating in long-range visioning for the program with the Family Ministry Committee.
- Communicating with the congregation and the Board of Trustees.
- Overseeing the administrative tasks required by the Religious Education program, including registration, purchasing supplies, financial management, and legal documents (medical release forms for children and youth, driver forms for field trips, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate Degree with at least some training in developmental milestones for children and youth.
- At least two years working professionally with children and youth.
- Demonstrated leadership in working within a team environment and supervising volunteers.
- Understanding of Unitarian Universalism (or willingness to quickly learn) foundational values.
- Proficiency with computer communications, especially with Google workspace (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides).

Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
