Director of Transportation

Position Summary:

The Transportation Director is responsible for the overall planning, coordination, and management of the school district’s transportation services. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and cost-effective transport of students to and from school and related activities. The Transportation Director oversees daily operations, including routing, fleet maintenance, driver supervision, and regulatory compliance, while maintaining high safety standards and excellent customer service. This position collaborates with school administrators, staff, families, and community partners to support the district’s educational mission and ensure reliable transportation services.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of the South Haven Public Schools Transportation Department, monitoring operations to ensure that staff members comply with all district policies and procedures, safety rules, union contracts, environmental policies, and government regulations.
  • Establish safe and efficient regular bus routes, and coordinate transportation for other school activities (co-curricular activities, field trips, etc.) as required.
  • Review and appropriately respond to passenger behavioral concerns, and work effectively with parents and other stakeholders to resolve transportation issues.
  • Recruit, select, and train personnel to maintain appropriate staffing levels.
  • Develop and implement a regular program of ongoing training to ensure high levels of professionalism among staff.
  • Evaluate personnel in accordance with collective bargaining contracts and district personnel procedures.
  • Oversee all aspects of the department budget including purchasing, billing, and payroll timesheets.
  • Maintain excellent records including all required state forms and records, mileage logs, student passenger reports, vehicle maintenance/service records, inventory, and

drug test records.

  • Determine equipment and vehicle needs, both immediate and long-term.
  • Arranges for substitutes and stand-by drivers or may drive a bus to cover absences for the purpose of providing adequate coverage to meet the transportation needs of the students.
  • Be in communication with all school buildings regarding the changes to bus schedules and assigned students.
  • Responds to emergencies including afterhours situations for the purpose of

addressing immediate safety concerns.

  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of internal and external parties (e.g. staff, parents, students, public agencies, etc.) for the purpose of providing information,

facilitating communication among parties and/or providing direction.

  • Make field decisions and recommendations regarding adverse weather, road, bus stop conditions and student safety issues; supervise, coordinate and evaluate the bus evacuation safety program.
  • Possess or be able to obtain any required Transportation Certification including appropriate Transportation Supervisor certification.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment: 260 Work Days

Evaluation: Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with Support Staff

Salary: $55k – $60k, Commensurate with experience
