Position Summary:
The Director of Transportation & Logistics will lead the strategy, design, and execution of Casella’s long-haul logistics operations, with an initial focus on third-party tractor-trailer movements and a long-term mandate to build a centralized, shared logistics services organization. This role will be responsible for establishing scalable systems, processes, and commercial structures to manage third-party, long-haul transportation of solid waste and recyclables from transfer stations to disposal and processing facilities, eventually expanding the scope to include intercompany tractors and enterprise-wide long-haul logistics.
Hiring Range is $130,000 - $160,000 with bonus eligibility
Key Responsibilities:
- Develops and executes a multi-year logistics strategy to centralize and optimize long-haul transportation across Casella, leading to a shared services logistics organization supporting both third-party and intercompany tractor-trailer operations.

Creates and defines organizational structure, roles, governance, and performance management while partnering with regional and operational leaders to drive adoption.

Leads all aspects of third-party long-haul transportation, including carrier sourcing, contracting, and rate negotiation, while managing contractual compliance & risk and long-term service relationships.

Establishes standardized processes for dispatch, routing, load planning, compliance, and exception management, while also implementing carrier scorecards and KPIs focused on cost, service, safety, and reliability.

Conducts systemic process optimization to support scalable operations, including evaluating and implementing tech-enabled logistics solutions, standardizing workflows, and developing data visibility.

Works to integrate intercompany tractor operations and extends logistics support to additional waste streams and products, such as solid waste, recyclables, leachate, biosolids, and other specialty waste streams.

Builds and develops a high-performing logistics team.

Partners with multiple divisions across Casella to proactively identify and mitigate regulatory, contractual, and operational risk.
- Supports M&A integration through operational onboarding while serving as the primary logistics partner to both internal customers and external vendors.

Participates in training and other learning opportunities to expand knowledge of the company, regulatory guidelines, and safety practices, as well as performing any other duties needed to help drive our vision, fulfill our mission, and/or abide by our core values.
Education, Experience & Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to lead through influence and demonstrate strong commercial acumen, including expertise in carrier contracting and cost management. Candidates should also have exposure to publicly traded company environments and SOX‑controlled processes.
Applicants must have at least 10 years of progressive experience in transportation, logistics, or supply chain management, along with a track record of successfully managing long‑haul tractor‑trailer operations and large‑scale third‑party carrier networks. Experience in waste management, industrial services, or other regulated, asset‑heavy industries is preferred. A bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience, is required. All candidates must also be legally eligible to work in the United States.
