Director-Respiratory Care Services-Full Time-Day-Mount Sinai Queens
Responsible for serving as administrative head and technical director of Respiratory Care Department and Cardiopulmonary Laboratory with responsibility for planning, organizing, coordinating, integrating and directing the administrative and operational activities associated with providing respiratory care, blood gas, and diagnostic pulmonary function testing services at the Medical Center.
Responsibilities-
Provides administrative direction and coordination in the formulation, interpretation and administration of current and long range policies, procedures and programs.

Oversees the daily operation of the department, including creating and implementing production schedules, and/or tracking and reporting systems, managing work assignments, and identifying and resolving issues.

Establishes goals and objectives for the department that are consistent with MSHS policies and federal, state and local regulations. This may include defining the scope of specific departmental projects, and analyzing requirements to execute those projects successfully.

Defines and documents procedures, identifies process and workflow changes for continuous improvement and implements best practices for greater efficiency. Provides process improvement assistance when needed, and evaluates and develops logical workflows where applicable.

Collaborates with Respiratory senior leadership and/or Chairman to develop short-term and long-range plans. Also serves as primary point-of-contact for interdepartmental communications, where applicable, in order to maintain standards, implement improvements, define and measure progress, and to meet business objectives.

Provides coordination for, and general supervision of, subordinate respiratory care / pulmonary function testing laboratory management staff. Develops and implements goals, standards, and performance guidelines for clinical and laboratory staff and supervisors. Provides guidance and leadership training to clinical and laboratory staff and supervisors as necessary and appropriate. Oversees discipline administration for all department personnel to ensure compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards. Ensures an adequate supply of appropriate and safe equipment necessary and incidental to provision of respiratory care / pulmonary function testing services at the Medical Center is available at all times. Maintains a current knowledge of respiratory care and cardiopulmonary testing equipment necessary and appropriate to the provision of respiratory care services and diagnostic pulmonary function testing. Develops and maintains a current inventory of necessary and appropriate respiratory care and cardiopulmonary testing equipment. Periodically evaluates condition, function, and appropriateness of existing equipment, and makes recommendations to Administration for replacement and/or upgrading as necessary. Ensures all non-disposable equipment is adequately tested, serviced, cleaned/sterilized and maintained according to manufacturer’s recommendations and applicable clinical standards.

Develops Position Descriptions and initial/ongoing Competency Assessments for all staff; ensures the competency of all staff is evaluated at least annually and otherwise as appropriate. Ensures development and implementation of staff training and upgrading programs necessary to evaluate and maintain staff competence. Develops and implements goals, standards, and performance guidelines for clinical and laboratory supervisors. Provides guidance and leadership training to clinical and laboratory supervisors as necessary and appropriate.

Ensures respiratory care / pulmonary function testing services at the Medical Center are properly provided by an adequate number of properly trained, licensed respiratory therapists and pulmonary function technologists. Evaluates staffing needs; coordinates recruitment efforts with the Human Resources Department as needed. Develops and implements staffing plans for the respiratory care department and cardiopulmonary laboratory to ensure adequate numbers of qualified staff are available at all appropriate times. Periodically reviews staff compliance with NYS licensure requirements; maintains awareness of any disciplinary action effecting NYS licensure of staff that affects their ability to practice their profession.

Ensures coordination of respiratory care / pulmonary function testing services with other clinical and non-clinical departments throughout the Medical Center. Develops and maintains appropriate communication with leadership of the Department of Nursing, Hospital Administration, representatives of the medical staff, and ancillary departments necessary and incidental to integration of respiratory care services into the mission of the Medical and Hospitals Centers. Responds promptly and appropriately to questions, problems, or inquiries originating from members of the nursing staff, Administration, physicians, and/or members of ancillary departments. Maintains appropriate interdisciplinary committee membership, attends and participates in interdisciplinary meetings and counsels to ensure proper integration of respiratory care into patient care services.

Develops, updates, and ensures implementation of policies and procedures necessary and incidental to the safe and effective delivery of comprehensive clinical and diagnostic respiratory care and pulmonary function testing services. Emergency airway care and resuscitation. Routine airway care, cuff pressure monitoring, suctioning, and bronchial hygiene techniques. Disaster and Bio-Terrorism Responses. Loss of primary gas or electrical power. Conventional adult mechanical ventilation. Conventional neonatal mechanical ventilation. High frequency ventilation. Ventilator adjustments and monitoring. Ventilator patient assessment and management protocols. Humidification and humidification protocols. Oxygen, carbon dioxide, and heliox therapy. Medicated aerosol therapy. Aerosol therapy safety precautions. Bedside and comprehensive laboratory pulmonary function testing. Hyperinflation therapy. Pulse oximetry and blood gas analysis. Transport of Ventilator Patients. Radial & Brachial Arteriotomy. Laboratory sample handling, infection control, cleaning and safety. Blood gas analyzer calibration/operation/quality control. Principles and technique of thermodilution cardiac output determinations.

Ensures respiratory care department policies and procedures are in compliance with applicable JCAHO, OSHA, and NYS requirements. Ensures current and valid NYS licensure status for all staff members providing clinical respiratory care respiratory services as defined by the NYS Education Law. Designs and implements the respiratory care department component of the quality assurance process and program of the Hospitals Center. Responds promptly and appropriately to questions, investigations, and/or inquiries from any regulatory authorities. Timely complies with all budgetary, cost, expenditure, reporting, and other requirements of the Hospitals/Medical Center Administration.

Maintains awareness of current OSHA & NYS Department of Health requirements related to respiratory care department staff. Maintains awareness of current NYS Education Department requirements related to professional licensed respiratory therapists and technicians.
Qualifications-
Education: Bachelor?s degree (Master?s preferred). Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

Experience: 8 years full-time experience in respiratory care including direct clinical experience in hospital based, acute respiratory care. Leadership management experience required.

Compensation
The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $95450 - $143175 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
