General Description

Responsible for efficient response to emergency and non-emergency communication services. Performs a variety of specialized and routine tasks in the provision of coordinating and relaying information and maintaining daily logs and other specialized and routine tasks. The Police Dispatcher must have a strong understanding of customer service combined with excellent communication skills.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Responsible for receiving, processing, and disseminating calls for service in an efficient manner to attain an appropriate and timely public safety response.
  • Handle confidential and sensitive information in a discreet manner.

  • Independently initiate action consistent with existing policies and procedures, based upon observed situations, and utilizing sound judgment.
  • Type correspondence and reports and assist in processing documents as required.
  • Communicate and liaise with Command Staff, employees, other agencies, and the public in a knowledgeable, efficient, and courteous manner.
  • Enter, update, and retrieve information from teletype networks and TLETS/NLETS relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, vehicles and other information.

Education/Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Must possess or obtain TCIC Full Access Operator, OpenFox, and TCLEOSE Basic Dispatcher certifications within the first six months of employment.
  • Ability to effectively operate a multi-line telephone console and multi-channel radio while maintaining professional etiquette.
  • Ability to maintain composure and interact effectively in a fast-paced environment with continual interruptions.
  • Must provide exceptional customer service.
  • Must demonstrate effective listening and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have effective verbal and written communication skills in English, bilingual helpful.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with integrity and discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask.
  • Must uphold TMC safety standards.
  • Must be able to navigate multiple software applications or databases concurrently.
  • Technical/Computer Skills: Microsoft Outlook and Word required.
  • Minimum of two years related experience in a dispatch or call center environment is preferred.

ABILITY TO

  • Learn and apply standard broadcasting procedures, rules, and radio or telephone communications receiving and transmitting equipment.
  • Become familiar with geographic features and streets of the Campus.
  • Learn and apply public safety classifications codes and computer commands.
  • Operate all communication equipment and office equipment quickly and accurately.
  • Speak clearly and precisely.
  • Work under pressure, exercise good judgment, make sound decisions in emergency situations.
  • Effectively communicate with and elicit information from upset and irate citizens.
  • Type at a speed necessary for adequate job performance.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Spell accurately.
  • Work various shifts as assigned including holidays, nights, weekends and during emergencies.

Essential Position: This is a position that is essential to the provision of emergency services during and/or following a disaster. Employees in this position may be required to remain on duty during a man-made or natural disaster despite a general evacuation order for the area. Such employees are also expected to remain available for their normal shifts and for recall to emergency duty unless specifically released by the Command Staff to evacuate. Employees in this position are specifically advised to plan accordingly for these circumstances and that any failure to adhere to these requirements may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Appointment will be conditional upon the successful completion of the following pre-employment checks:

  • Criminal Background Check
  • Psychological examination
  • Physical examination

Continued employment is contingent upon successfully completing the training and passing all testing required to obtain the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Telecommunicator certification within a year of employment.
