District 5 External Affairs Aide

Summary

The Metropolitan King County Council oversees the second largest government and the most populous county in Washington State. With more than 2.3 million residents, King County is the 12th largest county in the U.S. As the legislative branch of county government, the Council sets policies, enacts laws, and adopts budgets that guide an array of services for county residents.

Our dedicated employees provide quality regional services every day to county residents. We are also the local government for approximately 250,000 people who live in unincorporated urban and rural areas, and we provide services by contract to many of the county’s 39 cities.

The District 5 council work study student will work with members of the District 5 staff and Councilmember De’Sean Quinn focusing on external affairs including preparing for community events and appearances in District 5 and throughout King County, staffing those events/appearances and also helping construct a community event calendar.


Job Duties

  • Preparing written detailed logistics in advance of events and appearances that are complete and timely.
  • Attending events with the CM and helping “make the rounds” to meet everyone at an event. Exchanging and collecting business cards and/or contact information and doing appropriate follow-up correspondence. This may include evenings and weekends.
  • Writing and editing speeches and talking points as necessary.
  • Creating a “community calendar” of events and appearances in the district.
  • Creating a “key contacts” list of community leaders in the district.
  • Other projects as assigned: Be available to assist with other communications projects and/or community relations projects as needed. There will be special projects to be done with our District Director as well.
  • Extra credit for helping to organize and host an event. Job responsibilities may include the following additional responsibilities:
  • Correspondence: assist with research and composition of customized constituent correspondence as directed by staff. Assist with development of current databases of constituent groups for correspondence. Assist with reviewing incoming correspondence Requirement: Ability to use Microsoft Office and potentially a customized based constituent software system.
  • Contact list: Assist with updates to Councilmember De’Sean Quinn’s key people database/contact list as needed.
  • Phones: Assist with answering incoming calls from constituents requesting assistance or stating positions on issues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Excellence in verbal and written communication.

  • Professional-grade in-person customer service skills.

  • Ability to learn quickly, ask questions and utilize new information to achieve successful completion of work.

  • Consistent willingness to help with a variety of subjects and tasks upon request.

  • Detail-oriented.
