Pay Grade: Grade 8L; Step 05 – Step 08
Salary Range: $18.91/Hour - $22.27/Hour
Schedule: Mon – Fri; 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Certifications/Licenses Required: Valid Massachusetts Class B CDL License Preferred, Valid Certified Pool Operator License (must obtain within six (6) months of hire. High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

SUMMARY

The City of Chicopee’s Department of Public Works’ – Parks Division is hiring a Maintenance Craftsman who will perform assigned tasks with a high degree of skill in the care, maintenance, operation, and repair of Park facilities with a special attention to water related components including comfort stations, water sprays, pools, fountains, bubblers and irrigation. These tasks are assigned by a supervisor but are often performed without direct supervision. This position provides documentation of tasks completed and maintains records as required regarding the operation of pools and spray features. As a year-round position, this position assists with all other aspects of park operations as needed. Keeps all required licenses up to date.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Performs necessary maintenance, monitoring and treatment to operate all Park Department's pools, spray features, comfort stations, fountains, irrigation systems, and bubblers
  • Performs tasks required to start up water service in the spring and safely turn off water service and winterize lines in the fall for pools, spray features, comfort stations, fountains, irrigation systems, and bubblers. Responsible for planning and sequencing the work.
  • Performs tasks to bring pool water into balance, following guidelines provided by the contracted laboratory or vendor and in compliance with the Department of Public Health code for pool operations.
  • Utilizes chemicals safely to balance water, clean comfort stations, remove graffiti f equipment, fuel equipment, and apply paint as well as other applications.
  • Operates and maintains mechanical components of pool filtration system, comfort stations, spray features, fountains, irrigation systems, and bubblers.
  • Performs tasks required to purchase, store, and distribute pool chemicals for balancing pool water.
  • Maintains accurate records including inventory of parts, chemicals, water chemistry treatments, and daily pool tests.
  • Performs other parks related tasks as needed including painting, turf, diamond and field maintenance, leaf and snow removal.
  • Performs miscellaneous manual duties such as raking, shoveling, digging, hammering, painting, climbing ladders, lifting, bending, crawling, pulling, pushing and using manual tools, in the maintenance and renovation of parks, recreation areas, athletic fields, and playgrounds in preparation for active and passive recreational use or preservation as open space
  • Drives and/or operates machinery, vehicles and tools safely and effectively in order to cut and trim grass, cut and remove brush, groom, line and repair sport fields, including but limited to power tools, chain saw, mower, snow/leaf blower, groomer, seeder, painting machine, sprayer, weed whip, truck, cart, pallet jack, skid steer and compressor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Massachusetts Class B CDL License. – Preferred
  • Valid Certified Pool Operator License (must obtain within six (6) months of hire. – Required
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED). – Required
  • Experience in pool operation and plumbing.
  • Two (2) years of prior experience operating and maintaining water related systems including pools, spray features, comfort stations, fountains, irrigation systems and bubblers. - Required
  • Experience and high degree of skill at working with piping, wood, cement, and wiring to perform maintenance tasks sufficiently.
  • Experience with working outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
