Drax Unit 1 Outage - Pipe Welder
Job Overview
The Pipe Welder supports the outage project at Drax Unit 1 by welding and assembling piping systems. This role ensures the integrity and safety of all pipework by following detailed procedures and quality standards. The Pipe Welder works on-site, often in confined spaces and at heights, and follows strict environmental and safety protocols.
Job Duties
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, weld maps, and specifications.
- Prepare pipes, fittings, and materials by measuring, cutting, and cleaning workpieces.
- Align, clamp, and position pipes and components prior to welding.
- Carry out welding using methods such as manual arc welding, tungsten inert gas welding, and metal inert gas welding on carbon steel, stainless steel, and specialist alloys.
- Inspect completed welds using visual checks, non-destructive testing, and other approved methods.
- Follow approved weld procedures and maintain accurate weld records and documentation.
- Repair or remove defective welds using approved techniques.
- Maintain and clean welding equipment and tools regularly.
- Observe and enforce safe working practices at all times, including using appropriate personal protective equipment and following site safety rules.
- Work with other trades and supervisors to coordinate tasks efficiently.
- Report any safety incidents, equipment defects, or quality concerns to supervisors promptly.
- Adapt to changing work priorities and schedules, including potential overtime and shift work.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrable experience as a pipe welder in industrial or power generation environments.
- Certification in welding methods relevant to the outage project, including manual arc welding and tungsten inert gas welding.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications accurately.
- Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.
- Strong understanding of safe working practices and site safety procedures.
- Good attention to detail and ability to produce consistent, high-quality welds.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights as required.
- Physical ability to lift heavy materials and work in demanding conditions for extended periods.
- Willingness to work varied hours, including nights, weekends, and overtime as project demands.
- Valid welding qualification(s) as per project requirements and relevant site induction training completed, or willingness to complete site induction.
