JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision is, responsible for teaching and instructing pupils in beqelSuAucid and Muckleshoot culture, and monitors student progress in order to meet the individual needs of students. This position involves gaining experience and training as required in order to attain a Washington State First People’s Language Teaching Certificate in Coast Salish Language at a time set by the Tribe.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plans an instructional program designed to meet student needs prepares lesson plans.
  • Implements current program or curriculum objectives.
  • Establishes and implements classroom policies and procedures governing student behavior and conduct; provides guidance, counseling and discipline to encourage students to meet standards of achievement and conduct; makes referrals for assistance where appropriate.
  • Confers with education/center coordinator and other instructional staff to provide guidance and evaluation and to encourage student achievement.
  • Establishes classroom goals and objectives, in conformance with courses of monthly study, evaluates and records student progress, in collaboration with the education/center coordinator; prepares reports for Early Childhood Education Director.
  • Provide regular progress reports on the beqelSuAucid Program to the Manager/ Managing Director.
  • Collects and interprets a variety of data; provides reports for administrative purposes.
  • Maintains professional competence. Attends and participates in all educational, administrative, and professional growth activities/functions required, including, but not limited to, working towards attainment of the Washington State First People’s Language Teaching Certificate in Coast Salish Language.
  • Collaborate with the education/center coordinator in the development and maintenance of beqelSuAucid resources.
  • Work in partnership with the education/center coordinator beqelSuAucid curriculum research and development.
  • Work in partnership with the education/center coordinator in developing beqelSuAucid lessons, songs and dance.
  • Provide training, mentoring, and assistance with classroom inclusion for the beqelSuAucid teaching staff.
  • Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities, which may include driving.
EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION:
Required:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent, plus college level courses in early childhood education or liberal arts
  • Two (2) years of experience teaching using a wide variety of teaching styles and methods to meet the diverse needs of the students.
  • Two (2) years of exposure, study, and understanding the beqelSuAucid and Muckleshoot culture and experience and/or ability to teach to others.
  • Experience working with children.

Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Social Science, or related field from an accredited college or university preferred.
SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION:
Skilled in: Communicating effectively both orally and in writing; human relations; problem solving; designing and implementing lesson plans for students having a wide range of ages, abilities and achievement; interacting in a positive and confident manner; organizing and multi-tasking; providing instruction and demonstrating techniques; managing student behavior; use of standard office equipment, personal computer, and applicable software programs.

Knowledge of:
beqelSuAucid and Muckleshoot culture; child development and behavior management; age appropriate activities; health, safety, injury prevention; and sanitary practices; conflict resolution techniques.

Ability to:
Be flexible and adapt to meet the needs of the children and program; maintain confidential information; work effectively and efficiently; work and communicate well with all levels of faculty and staff; work and communicate well with students and their parents; speak understand and read the beqelSuAucid.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
Licenses or Certifications Required: A valid Washington State driver’s license and CPR/First Aid certification is required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe. Attendance and participation in the Muckleshoot Tribe’s approved Language Certification Program is required upon hire.
