Early Childhood Lead Teacher

Position Summary:

An Early Childhood Lead Teacher is responsible for creating a nurturing, supportive, and challenging environment that fosters children’s development using Montessori Philosophy and the principles of Whole Child Development. The Lead Teacher will guide children in their learning journey, fostering their independence, curiosity, and respect for others while focusing on the cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development of each child. The Teacher will work collaboratively with other educators, parents, and the Program Director to implement a holistic and individualized educational approach.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Montessori Classroom Instruction & Curriculum Implementation:

● Develop and implement Montessori-based lessons that align with the developmental needs and interests of each child, fostering independent learning and exploration.

● Guide children in using Montessori materials to explore concepts in math, language, science, practical life, and cultural studies.

● Provide a prepared environment that is organized, calm, and conducive to self-directed learning, allowing children to choose activities based on their developmental needs.

● Observe and assess each child’s progress, making observations and documenting milestones in their academic, social, emotional, and physical development.

● Support the individual learning styles and development of each child by offering appropriate challenges, guidance, and materials.

2. Whole Child Development:

● Foster social and emotional development, teaching children about empathy, respect, conflict resolution, and cooperation.

● Promote physical development through activities that enhance fine and gross motor skills, such as outdoor play, yoga, and creative movement.

● Incorporate self-regulation and mindfulness practices to help children understand and manage their emotions, behaviors, and interactions with others.

● Create an environment where each child’s self-esteem is nurtured, and their sense of independence, responsibility, and confidence is strengthened.

3. Classroom Management & Community Building:

● Create and maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages collaboration and problem-solving.

● Establish clear expectations for behavior, providing guidance and redirection when necessary, and helping children learn to take responsibility for their actions.

● Encourage the development of peer relationships by promoting teamwork and respectful communication between children.

● Engage children in activities that promote cultural awareness, respect for diversity, and community involvement.

4. Parent & Family Engagement:

● Develop strong, open communication with parents, providing regular updates on the child’s progress and milestones.

● Share insights about the child’s social, emotional, and academic growth and provide strategies for parents to support learning at home.

● Participate in parent-teacher conferences and assist in organizing family-centered events or workshops to engage the community.

● Provide resources and guidance to families on topics related to Montessori philosophy, child development, and positive parenting techniques.

5. Collaboration with Team:

● Work collaboratively with other teaching staff, assistants, and administrators to maintain a cohesive educational experience across classrooms.

● Participate in staff meetings, professional development sessions, and curriculum planning to share insights and contribute to the continual improvement of the program.

● Support new staff or assistants in understanding and applying Montessori principles in the classroom.

6. Administrative Duties:

● Maintain accurate records on child progress, attendance, and any other necessary documentation in compliance with licensing requirements and center policies.

● Assist with the organization and maintenance of the classroom environment, ensuring that materials are replenished and stored appropriately.

● Ensure that the classroom environment adheres to health and safety guidelines, maintaining a clean, safe, and organized learning space.

Qualifications:

● At least 18 years of age.

● High school diploma or equivalent.

● One of the following qualifications:

○ Option A: Associate degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related academic discipline from a regionally accredited college or university.

○ Option B: Technical certificate or diploma in Early Childhood Education.

○ Option C: Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.

○ Option D: Three semester hours of academic study or equivalent training in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related discipline from a regionally accredited college or university, and at least three months of experience in early childhood education providing direct care and supervision to children of the same age range they will be serving.

○ Option E: Six months of experience in early childhood education providing direct care and supervision to children of the same age range they will be serving.

● Montessori Certification (AMI, AMS, or equivalent) for the appropriate age group (preferred).

● Each individual at least 16 years of age who is living, working, or regularly volunteering in the facility shall have a record of a negative tuberculosis test or x ray obtained not more than two years before the date of employment or initial application for a license or not later than 30 days after the date of employment or initial application.

● Experience:

○ Strong understanding of Montessori philosophy and whole child development principles. ○ Experience in creating a prepared environment and working with individualized educational plans.

● Certifications:

○ Current CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

○ State-specific certifications and clearances (background check, health screening).

● Skills:

○ Deep understanding of Montessori principles and developmentally appropriate practices. ○ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with children and families.

○ Ability to maintain a calm, patient, and nurturing presence while managing classroom dynamics.

○ Strong observational and documentation skills to track children’s progress and make informed decisions about their learning.

○ Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

● Ability to lift up to 25 pounds (e.g., lifting classroom materials, assisting children with activities).

● Ability to spend long periods on your feet and engage in active play or movement with children.

● Ability to kneel, bend, and squat to interact with children at their level.
