ECU Community School Teacher

This is an open employment posting for University Community School Classroom Teacher positions for the 2026-2027 school year. The College of Education will review applications regularly in order to fill vacancies which may occur during the school year. These positions are eleven-month, full time, stated definite term, exempt professional staff (EPS) appointments in the College of Education and report to the ECU Community School principal.

As an educator within the East Carolina University School, the teacher will cultivate a culture of innovation that supports effective instructional practices/strategies to promote student academic and personal success for all students in the school. The Teacher will work collaboratively with others to facilitate and implement innovative instruction to achieve the mission of the school. The teacher will work collaboratively with the ECU Community School Principal and university faculty/staff to support the successful social-emotional, physical, and academic development of the students within the community school.

Duties include:
Leadership (40%):
  • Demonstrate leadership to motivate effective learning practices and to strive for superior student performance
  • Cultivate leadership in students and families.
  • Facilitate the broad goals of the school and plan accordingly and collaboratively with other teachers, the ECU Community School Principal, the ECU Community School Director and ECU faculty members to ensure that procedures and schedules are implemented to carry out the total community school program.
  • Effectively assess students through a variety of methods to determine appropriate instructional strategies and learning environments.
  • Serve as an advocate for students through implementation of innovative strategies and integration of a variety of support services such that each student’s social, emotional, physical and academic potential can be maximized.


Communication (30%):
  • Maximize the interconnectedness of curricular areas within the classroom to meet the needs of various learners.
  • Seek to connect students and their families with appropriate services embedded within the Community School’s integrated network of partners who will provide service and support for non-academic issues that impact student learning.
  • Actively engage in ongoing communication with parents to ensure they are informed about their child’s progress within the school and to ensure families are aware of school resources available for their child and their family.
  • Receive visitors within the classroom for the purpose of instruction, assistance, research, and observation (which will include being observed, videotaping, and interviews).

Collaboration (30%):
  • Engage in and enhance meaningful collaboration and relationships amongst school and community stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with university staff to ensure accessibility to students needed to conduct research.
  • Actively participate in professional development offered within the Lab School and beyond
  • Serve as an advocate for students through implementation of innovative strategies and integration of a variety of support services such that each student’s social, emotional, physical and academic potential can be maximized.

Contingent upon availability of funds.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field; demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills; and evidence of skill working with at risk student populations. Qualifying degrees must be conferred and received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
NC Teaching Licensure in elementary (K-6) or related field or be eligible to obtain one.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Preference will be given to candidates who have 3 years teaching experience in innovative schools with a track record of improving student outcomes for all subgroups. Teaching experience with student groups is preferred. Graduates of East Carolina University teacher education programs are preferred.

Additional preferred qualities would include the following: knowledge of public school and university partnerships; experience as a school-level mentor or clinical teacher. Demonstrated experience performing in a self-directed capacity; organized with attention to detail; innovation and outcome oriented; technologically proficient across multiple platforms; possess strong interpersonal relationship skills including collaboration with individuals; highly motivated and be willing to be receptive to innovative practices/procedures; willing to take the initiative to learn the duties/responsibilities/expectations of the work and operations of the community school; and willing to work alone or as a group/team when necessary.
