FACILITIES MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

(MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• High School diploma or G.E.D.

  • Valid Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Certification for refrigerant recovery (within 90 days)
  • Three (3) years verified experience in installation, troubleshooting, repairing, and servicing Heating, Ventilation and Air
Conditioning (HVAC) systems;
  • Up to two (2) years experience may be waived with verification of completion of an HVAC certification/ degree program;
chiller experience preferred
  • A combination of five (5) years verified experience in any of the following areas of facility maintenance: HVAC, Electrical,
Plumbing, and Carpentry
  • Must be available after working hours (on-call) as a part of the emergency and disaster team
  • Must be available for scheduled shift work
  • Must be able to attend and complete on-the-job training at various locations
  • Provide personal hand tools in accordance with established department list
  • Possess a valid Florida Driver’s License; if a holder of any other valid US state-issued Driver’s License, agree to acquire a
Florida Driver’s License within thirty (30) days of employment, except in a case where accommodation is required, must
acquire tanker vehicles endorsement within ninety-day (90) probation period
  • Must be able to operate school board vehicles, when assigned, in accordance with operational procedures and School
Board Policy 505


REQUIRED SKILLS
• Ability to interpret/ understand blueprints, schematics and written diagrams for use in troubleshooting and renovating

  • Knowledge of current technology, systems, and applications as it pertains to the related field
  • Basic knowledge of codes, building systems and components and their relationship to maintaining a healthy building
environment
  • Basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of writing schedules and prioritizing workload
  • Ability to fulfill all work requirements competently
  • Knowledge of the standards, practices, methods, equipment, materials, tools and time needed to complete an assignment
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team
  • Ability to work productively with little or no supervision
  • Ability to perform tedious tasks
  • Ability to read, comprehend and use written instructions, directions regarding precautions, maintenance and
recommended use of job related chemicals, equipment, tools or products
  • Ability to use and maintain all types of specialty equipment, chemicals and tools
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with diverse individuals and groups, other departments and
schools and to coordinate activities with each as required
  • Ability to participate in all types of emergency/ disaster clean-up
  • Ability to report to assigned work locations and be flexible as it relates to time of work assignment
  • Desire to learn additional tasks through supervised maintenance job training

3. *Abide by all security procedures.
4. *Represent Volusia County School Board (VCSB) and the Department with a positive and professional service oriented

demeanor.
5. *Work as part of a team by establishing and maintaining working relationships that foster efficiency, productivity, quality

results, and promotes cooperation with administrators, fellow employees, students, faculty and the public.
6. *Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair malfunctioning systems and components.
7. *Interpret and make recommendations of engineering drawings and equipment manuals related to Facilities systems.
8. *Survey schools for preventive maintenance scope of work as directed and perform preventative maintenance as scheduled.
9. *Use equipment properly to eliminate or reduce exposure to fumes, noxious odors, mists, gases and poor ventilation that affect

the respiratory system, eyes or skin.
10. *Maintain stock and control inventory as assigned.
11. *Communicate verbally and in writing as assigned.
12. *Conduct a daily review and maintenance of assigned equipment.
13. *Report any damage/dangerous or hazardous conditions related to work orders, equipment or vehicles to supervisor.
14. *Maintain a clean orderly work environment, which includes all equipment.
15. * Abide by safety rules/ standards when using tools and equipment, which includes wearing required safety equipment and

compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) requirements.
16. *Wear provided designated departmental uniform.
17. *Attend and/ or conduct cross-training sessions with others in the Division and apply skills/ knowledge obtained.
18. *Work in high heat/ humidity and/ or cold environments.
19. *Perform various duties from a ladder, high lift, bucket truck or scaffold.
20. *Respond during times of disaster/ emergency, as the need arises, including evenings and weekends.
21. *Perform effectively in emergency situations.
22. *Operate school board vehicles, when assigned, in accordance with operational procedures and School Board Policy 505.
23. *Provide personal tools as required, to perform assigned work.
24. *Perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations.
