Editorial Coordinator

The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) seeks a qualified individual to serve as an Editorial Coordinator. This is a part-time hourly position.

The Historical Society of Michigan, the state’s oldest cultural organization, helps to connect the stories of all Michigan’s peoples to students, educators, historical organizations and the public through education programs, conferences, publications, awards, workshops, referral services, networking opportunities, and support for local history organizations. HSM is the publisher of Michigan History and Chronicle magazine, the Historic Michigan Travel Guide, The Michigan Historical Review, and other publications. HSM is a member-supported educational 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Editorial Coordinator, working under the direction of the Editor in Chief, performs a variety of writing, editing, research, and support duties to aid in the publication of materials. This position also helps handle photo acquisition, works with freelance graphic artists, and performs administrative tasks.

Duties include:

· Edit and/or proofread manuscripts from freelance authors.

· Contact authors as needed to obtain clarification on content, matters of fact, etc.

· Research and write short articles and other forms of copy for special sections.

· Edit and/or proofread copy from both in-house staff and outside source documents, making stylistic, structural, and grammatical changes as needed.

· Research and locate images to accompany articles, as well as request permission to reproduce those images from individuals, organizations, etc.

· Complete basic page layouts in Adobe InDesign for select sections using existing templates. Make text changes and corrections within InDesign documents.

· Communicate with freelance graphic designers to assist in the creation of magazine layouts. This includes annotating the manuscript with applicable instructions and working within Google Drive to deliver and/or receive relevant article materials.

· Review finished articles to make sure they adhere to HSM’s style and specifications.

· Administer permission and payment forms for contributors.

· Develop promotional content as needed.

· Assist with administrative duties as needed.

· Attend bi-weekly editorial committee meetings to review queries and manuscripts.

· Attend weekly editorial production meetings to communicate progress on magazine production.

· Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Minimum of 2-3 years professional experience writing, copyediting, and proofreading. Experience working in marketing is a plus.

· Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong vocabulary, spelling, and grammar skills.

· Able to read, synthesize, and reframe information from various sources for a lay audience.

· Detail-oriented, organized, good at multitasking and problem-solving

· Experience working with style guides and specification sheets.

· Self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.

· Competency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and Google Drive.

· Interest in Michigan history and/or interest in nonprofit organizations a plus.

Reports to: Editor in Chief, HSM Publications

Hours: 24 hours a week. This is not a remote position. Work is to be performed in our office in Lansing, Michigan.

Pay Rate: $17-$19 per hour.
