The Astronomy Educator is responsible for designing and delivering engaging educational experiences that inspire curiosity about astronomy and space science. This role combines teaching, public outreach, and science communication to make complex astronomical concepts accessible and exciting for learners of all ages and backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and present astronomy lessons, workshops, and demonstrations for students, educators, and the general public
  • Deliver live or recorded presentations in classrooms, planetariums, observatories, museums, or community settings
  • Create age-appropriate educational materials aligned with curriculum standards and learning objectives
  • Operate and explain telescopes, planetarium systems, and other astronomical equipment
  • Lead public observing sessions, star parties, and special astronomy events
  • Stay current with developments in astronomy and space science and integrate them into programming
  • Collaborate with educators, scientists, and outreach partners on educational initiatives
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and adapt teaching methods based on audience feedback

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics, Science Education, or a related field (Master’s preferred for some roles)
  • Experience teaching or presenting science content to diverse audiences
  • Strong verbal communication and public speaking skills
  • Ability to explain complex scientific concepts in an engaging, accessible way
  • Comfort working with technology, audiovisual tools, and scientific equipment
  • Evening or weekend availability for public programs and observing sessions

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Teaching certification or formal education training
  • Experience in informal science education (planetariums, museums, science centers)
  • Familiarity with curriculum standards and inquiry-based learning
  • Experience with telescope operation, astrophotography, or planetarium software
  • Passion for science outreach and public engagement

Work Environment

  • Combination of indoor classrooms, planetariums, and outdoor observing sites
  • May involve travel to schools or community locations
  • Flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
