The Penn State Facilities Engineering Institute (PSFEI) is seeking a n Electrical Systems Specialist with experience in electrical power systems operations and maintenance to join our team and help advance our mission of assist ing facility managers across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with improving the safety, reliability, and efficiency of their facility ’s electrical systems .

PSFEI is a front-facing, non-academic unit with a long tradition of providing facility engineering services since our founding in 1947 . PSFEI is part of the College of Engineering at Penn State University Park and touches the lives of thousands of people in all 67 counties of Pennsylvania and beyond through engineering advisory services , adult education program s , facilit ies assessment and planning , and energy management . Through our continued success, we have grown to a workforce of over 40 engineers, technical specialists, programmers, and administrative staff located throughout the Commonwealth. We remain committed to helping our clients optimize the operation of their facilities and supporting our staff in achieving a high level of satisfaction in carrying out this mission .
Your R ole at PSFEI
As an Electrical System Specialist , you will join a team of other specialists and engineers who apply their electrical systems expertise and problem-solving skills to provide clients with technical insight and services focused on power systems that are critical to the successful operation of their facilit ies . The recommendations and services you provide support mission- critical operations across the Commonwealth.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Perform preventative maintenance and testing services of low and medium voltage electrical distribution equipment including switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, relays, and cabling , in coordination client site maintenance personnel .
Troubleshoot electrical system issues , investigate fault s , perform minor corrective repairs, and respond to emergency power interruptions and outages .
Assess client electrical systems and recommend services to improve reliability, compliance, and safety , and d evelop project scope s and objectives based on recommendations provided.
Plan and manage project activities, including scheduling, personnel coordination , material need s, electrical outages , and safe work procedure s.
Prepare technical reports summarizing project activities , observations, actions taken, test results, and recommendations for follow-up.
Provide on - site training to client maintenance personnel in electrical safety, operations, and maintenance practices .
Offer off-site (remote) client technical support, including troubleshooting assistance , corrective action recommendations , and responses to technical inquiries through verbal and written communication.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted

This position is a blend of office and fieldwork that primarily requires day travel , with occasional overnight stay s .
This position is based at the PSFEI office in State College, PA, adjacent to the Penn State University Park campus.
Flexible work arrangements, including hybrid or remote options, may be available depending on operational needs and job responsibilities. Questions related to flexible work arrangements should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.
A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check are required .
Security clearances may be required for access to certain client sites.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES
Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties.
