Electrician (Skilled Trade Specialist II)

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. Nature of Work: The main purpose of this position is to perform journey level electrical work in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations and standard practices or rules governing the electrical trade. The duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical equipment such as ballasts, cable, conduit boxes, conduit tubing, control systems, coils, electronic signage, fans, fluorescent and incandescent units, fuses, generators, high mast light poles, outlets, panels, relays, switches, navigational lights, transformers, wiring and roadway lighting systems, and emergency standby systems. Work may include other maintenance duties as assigned.

This is maintenance work requiring physical exertion performed either outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MDOT building. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds and may also be required to work on equipment located on high poles or other elevated locations, and/or perform their job in cramped quarters in buildings or underground. The employee may also provide additional support for carpentry, locksmithing, masonry, painting, welding and/or HVAC tasks with co-workers as needed.

Employees in this classification are considered essential employees and are subject to emergency call-back procedures, twenty-four hours a day, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shift work, to include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Skilled Trade Specialist Supervisor or other designated supervisor. The current vacancy exists in Perryville, MD (Cecil County) at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway - Utility Shop. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies at other facilities throughout the MDTA.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFIATIONS:

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of experience performing skilled trade work as an electrician.

Notes:

1. Additional work experience performing skilled trades work as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. A certificate from a vocational technical school with a major in one or more of the skilled trades as defined above may be substituted for one year of the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in the skilled trades as defined above field of work, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Licenses & Certifications

1. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees are required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.

2. During the probationary period, employees may be required to obtain and maintain a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland, depending on the type of equipment operated.

3. The employing administration may require employees to satisfy its agency training, and certification program requirements to obtain and maintain permanent status in this classification.
