What You Will Do:
We are currently searching for an outstanding, highly skilled Electron Microscopy (EM) Laboratory Technologist to support the overall objectives of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).The individual selected for this position will provide training and access to cutting edge techniques and instrumentation to investigators requiring electron microscopy in their research promoting interdisciplinary collaboration with a variety of groups within the NIH.This position will involve working with hazardous chemicals under strict safety guidelines.This is a full-time, on-site opportunity in Bethesda, MD.
Organize and maintain inventory of lab supplies, consumables, and equipment.
Learn new laboratory techniques and procedures.
Monitor operational procedures in technical environments to ensure conformance to safety standards.
Maintain detailed notes on research and laboratory work and be able to provide summaries when needed.
Provide research lab support by performing electron microscopy (EM) protocols on biological and material samples, including sample preparation (fixation, heavy metal staining, dehydration, and embedding), semi- and ultra-thin sectioning, post-staining, and imaging.
Collect, process, and analyze lab samples independently.
Operate simple light microscopes, transmission electron microscopes (TEM), and scanning electron microscopes (SEM) to produce high-quality digital images of client samples.
Prepare and maintain stocks of commonly used solutions and materials for all staff and users of the EM Core.
Compile results and prepare technical reports and appropriate documentation of outcomes.
Participate in ongoing projects to prepare samples and collect EM images for scientific publications.
Train EM Core users on the use of general lab equipment and EM techniques.
Train EM Core users on sample preparation protocols and specialized equipment operations such as TEM and SEM, following a standard operating procedure.
Interact with vendors and service providers to ensure proper functioning and servicing of equipment.
Monitor compliance with NIH and OSHA safety requirements.
Ensure the lab’s yearly Safety Survey is conducted and lab complies by addressing any safety concerns identified during the surveys.
Maintain the lab in an organized, clean manner. Stock supplies and dispose of chemical waste at regular time intervals.
Write and update protocols for lab equipment and processing techniques.
Assist with scheduling instruments and equipment through the online management system (iLab).
Schedule and maintain records of equipment and facility use and assist Directors in billing.
Maintain instrumentation by troubleshooting and performing or coordinating maintenance, service, and repair tasks (e.g., performing alignments, calibrations, water cooling system maintenance, etc.).
What You Will Need:
Master’s degree in Biology or a related field with minimum ONE (1+) year of EM experience OR a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field with minimum THREE (3+) years of EM, in lieu of Master’s degree.
High level of proficiency in techniques such as preparing ultrathin sections of resin embedded samples on an ultramicrotome.
Strong knowledge of laboratory safety policies and regulations.
Strong computer and software skills and ability to set up and operate diverse scientific equipment.
Team-oriented, strong organizational skills in managing competing priorities; effective communication in fast-paced high-thruput lab environment with investigators and core facility staff.
Ability and willingness to work with hazardous chemicals under strict safety guidelines.
Demonstrated experience with chemical safety practices, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), waste segregation and disposal procedure.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD Public Trust. Candidates must receive approved adjudication of their Public Trust prior to onboarding with Guidehouse. Candidates with an active Public Trust or existing suitability are preferred.
