Elementary Dual Language Immersion Teacher (Chinese, French, or Spanish)
Granite School District seeks Elementary Dual Language Immersion Teachers (Chinese, French, or Spanish) in Salt Lake City, Utah. Essential functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:
DUTIES:
(1) Teach students in 1st through 5th grades in the Target Language of Instruction (Chinese, French, or Spanish), using the Utah Dual Language Immersion program model in the core content areas outlined in the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) Core Curriculum, and adopted by the USBE, correlated with other approved learning activities using the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) proficiency level of Advanced-Mid or higher for the Target Language of Instruction;
(2) Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the child;
(3) Utilize effective teaching techniques in translating lesson plans into productive student learning experiences which best utilize the time available for instruction;
(4) Utilize computers and other technological classroom support equipment in student instruction;
(5) Supervise students both indoors and outdoors (e.g. recess duty, gymnasium activities, etc.) in all types of weather and air quality;
(6) Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom through organization and appropriate discipline strategies; (7) Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, maintain appropriate records, and prepare progress reports;
(8) Be familiar with and willing to implement Proficiency-Based Learning in evaluating students;
(9) Be familiar with and willing to implement the Granite Way;
(10) Communicate with parents through conferences, telephone calls, e-mails, student planners, school website, and other appropriate means, to discuss the student’s progress;
(11) Communicate and cooperate with other professional staff regarding the student’s academic and personal growth areas;
(12) Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are essential functions of this position;
(13) Create an effective learning environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers;
(14) Provide and maintain a safe and supportive environment in the classroom and on the school campus;
(15) Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school district and self-selected professional growth activities;
(16) Participate in faculty meetings as required;
(17) Administer appropriate student attendance policies and procedures;
(18) Participate in appropriate educator evaluation procedures as per district guidelines;
(19) Administer group standardized tests in accordance with state and district testing procedures;
(20) Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities;
(21) Select and requisition books and instruction materials; maintain required inventory records;
(22) Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, colleagues, and members of the community;
(23) Understand and adhere to laws, district policies, and procedures;
(24) Maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school staff, district staff, and members of the community;
(25) Demonstrate professional ethics as outlined by the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission;
(26) Be a positive role model;
(27) Develop an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) for each eligible student; and
(28) Such other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. [NOTE: This position may teach at any of the schools in the Granite School District where 1st through 5th grades are taught, all of which are within Salt Lake County, Utah.]
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Teaching, Education, the Target Language of Instruction (Chinese, French, or Spanish), or a closely related field. A foreign equivalent is acceptable.
License: Educator license with endorsements in World Language and Dual Language Immersion issued by Utah State Board of Education; or, within 90 days of hiring date be eligible to obtain said license and endorsements; or meet all the requirements to enroll in the District's Educator Licensing APPEL Program;
Other requirements: (1) If the required license and endorsements are not yet obtained, has received an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) score of Advanced-Mid or higher for both the Target Language of Instruction and English as administered by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL); or to demonstrate Target Language of Instruction proficiency has
received a post-secondary degree from an institution of higher education located in a country where the Target Language of Instruction is the primary language; or to demonstrate English
proficiency has received a post-secondary degree from an institution of higher education located in a country where English is the primary language; (2) Cleared a USBE-approved criminal background check; (3) Demonstrated ability to promote and facilitate active language learning environment using the Target Language of Instruction; and (4) Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a positive learning environment and handle classroom management issues in a calm manner.
