The Specials Teacher at AAK is responsible for designing and delivering a dynamic elementary program for PE. This is an exciting position for a creative individual who is interested in designing an engaging and dynamic program with the support and collaboration of the Specials Team. The Specials Teacher works with each of our classes PK-5 at least once a week creating a class environment that encourages learning, creativity, and personal growth; establishing effective rapport with students; motivating students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to support academic and relational character; and establishing positive relationships with parents and with other staff members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Designs age-appropriate curriculum in Physical Education.
  • Integrates movement, music, and art into the curriculum or learning activities when appropriate
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials to teach the Specials area.
  • Explains learning objectives and student expectations
  • Differentiates instruction and curriculum to meet individual student needs
  • Provides opportunities for student goal setting, reflection, and self-assessment
  • Uses assessment to improve learning and instruction
  • Utilizes standards based grading patterns that are fairly administered and based on identified criteria
  • Works effectively with students of different ages, abilities, and behaviors, creating a loving, supportive, and welcoming environment for all students.
  • Reinforces social-emotional skills through both the content and the methods
  • Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports
  • As applicable, teaches to state standards and reinforces the standards taught in other subject areas
  • Sets behavior expectations and consequences that are clear and consistently enforced
  • Participates in functional behavior assessments and in the development of intervention and support plans of individual students as necessary and required
  • Maintains and submits accurate and complete records and trainings as required.
  • Complies with school-set expectations for lesson plans, instructional reviews, evaluations, report cards, and other required submissions throughout the year
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students progress and interpret the school program. Interacts with students, staff, and parents in a positive and professional matter
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students address health, behavior and learning challenges
  • Establishes rapport with students and provides a positive, safe and orderly climate conducive to learning
  • Actively participates in the full implementation of the School Unified Improvement Plan
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and self-selected professional growth activities
  • Supervises students in and out of classroom activities during the assigned working day
  • Assumes responsibility for instruction, duties, supervision of students, and required meetings at designated times
  • Participates in after-school or off-campus activities and events as assigned
