Emergency Room Assistant I -- EMERGENCY ROOM -- Davis Medical Center

Job Summary

Provides assistance to the medical and nursing staff in giving direct patient care. Provides technical services as assigned and directed. Attends nursing station and performs clerical and reception duties. Requisitions supplies, equipment, and services as directed.


Responsibilities

1. Cleans and prepares room and monitors and restocks supplies between procedures and after terminal cleaning. Ensures an adequate stock of all supplies including linens, head of bed supplies, and cabinet supplies before end of worked shift.

2. Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment prior to procedures.

3. Displays good team member qualities by assisting other members of the ED nursing team and other disciplines in delivering expedient quality nursing care to all patients.

4. Monitors conditions of patients and promptly reports changes to appropriate personnel.

5. Ensures the correct taking of temperatures, pulse rates (apical and radial), respiratory rates, and blood pressure as necessary. Documents results in patient’s chart with appropriate time and signature.

6. Appropriately prepares patients for testing and procedures, i.e., removing clothing, jewelry, keys, belts, etc., prior to x-ray or other testing.

7. Transports patients to the units for admission, x-ray and other areas for treatment and testing.

8. Obtains various specimens for testing as ordered, maintaining sterile or aseptic techniques as appropriate. Ensures that the specimens are labeled appropriately and sent or transported to lab. Accurately documents information in the patient’s chart.

9. Recognizes need for 12-lead EKG and performs 12-lead ECG in a timely manner ensuring that the nurse or Physician reviews it ASAP.

10. Recognizes the importance of sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy. Maintains a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients, families, and guests in accordance with hospital standards.

11. Undertakes routine housekeeping duties as necessary to avoid delay of ED operations. Routinely keeps ED rooms tidy and clean.

12. Prioritizes and manages the care of multiple assigned patients.

13. Answer call light and provide sitter duties if necessary.

14. Feeding, bathing, turning patients and assist with ambulatory needs.

15. Documents in patient’s chart all interventions with appropriate time and signature.

16. Actively seeks advice and/or direction from Charge Nurse when appropriate.

17. Prioritizes and manages the care of multiple assigned patients.

18. Reports to the Charge Nurse at the beginning of each shift to take report and receive shift assignment.

19. Inventory Count daily and when due.

20. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient ranging from newborn to geriatric.

21. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, supports quality assessment and performance improvement processes, adheres to safety, environmental and infection control standards.

22. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops. Maintains current CPR certification.

23. Attends meetings as required.

24. Performs other duties as assigned.

25. Requisitions supplies, equipment, maintenance, and repair service, (Work Orders) and prepares related forms. Keeps stock and equipment inventories current. Assists with care and maintenance of equipment and supplies and obtaining supplies and equipment for patients.

26. Applies orthopedic software and splints to patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse or Physician. Checks circulation prior to and after intervention and documents information in patient’s chart.

27. Appropriately places HARE traction and C-spine immobilization to patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse.

28. Ability to provide phlebotomy functions as needed/requested. (Will be trained)

29. Ability to draw blood cultures. (Will be trained)

30. Demonstrate ability to perform Ear, Eye, and Wound irrigation on patient when needed.

31. Ability to use the Morgan Lens.

32. Demonstrate the ability to use proper sterile technique.

33. Ability to use bear hugger when needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Preferred Experience: EMT or CNA, One-year previous clinical experience in area of expertise or Licensed paramedic with a minimum of 1 year runtime experience, preferably current.

Physical Demands: Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching Prolonged extensive or considerable standing/walking Considerably heavy lifting, e.g., lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers supplies and equipment.

Working Conditions: The Emergency Department can, and often is, a fast paced and demanding work environment that requires the ability to multitask, think quickly, and work effectively as a critical team member. Employees will be:

Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases

Have contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances

May be exposed to patient elements

Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, and illness)

Subject to varying and unpredictable situations

Required to handle emergency or crisis situations

Subject to irregular hours


Education

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)

Credentials

  • Emergency Medical TechnicianPreferred
  • Nursing Assist, CertPreferred
  • Basic Life Support

Work Schedule: Varies
