Job Summary
The Emergency Room Nurse is responsible for providing rapid assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for patients presenting with acute illnesses, injuries, and life-threatening conditions. The role requires the ability to prioritize care, respond effectively to emergencies, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Perform rapid patient assessments and triage according to established emergency department protocols.
- Identify actual and potential health problems and prioritize care based on patient acuity.
- Initiate emergency nursing interventions and provide immediate care for critically ill or injured patients.
- Monitor, assess, and document patients' clinical conditions and responses to treatment.
- Administer medications, intravenous therapies, blood products, and treatments as prescribed.
- Assist physicians and other healthcare professionals during examinations, procedures, and resuscitation efforts.
- Operate and monitor emergency equipment, including cardiac monitors, defibrillators, ventilators, and infusion devices.
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies, trauma cases, cardiac arrests, and disaster situations.
Patient and Family Care
- Provide compassionate care and emotional support to patients and families during emergency situations.
- Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, discharge instructions, medications, and follow-up care.
- Advocate for patient safety, dignity, and rights throughout the care process.
- Facilitate effective communication between patients, families, and the healthcare team.
Care Coordination
- Collaborate with physicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists, laboratory personnel, radiology staff, and other healthcare professionals.
- Coordinate admissions, transfers, referrals, and discharges as appropriate.
- Ensure continuity of care through effective handovers and documentation.
Quality and Patient Safety
- Adhere to infection prevention and control standards.
- Ensure compliance with emergency department policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement, risk management, and patient safety initiatives.
- Report and document incidents, adverse events, and safety concerns according to organizational policy.
- Support disaster preparedness and emergency response planning activities.
Documentation
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete patient records in the electronic medical record system.
- Document assessments, interventions, treatments, medications, and patient outcomes in accordance with professional standards.
Professional Practice
- Maintain clinical competency in emergency nursing practices and procedures.
- Participate in continuing education, mandatory training, and professional development activities.
- Serve as a resource and mentor to junior nursing staff when appropriate.
- Participate in departmental meetings, audits, accreditation activities, and performance improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or equivalent recognized nursing qualification.
- Current Registered Nurse license in accordance with local regulatory requirements.
Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – Required.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – Preferred/Required based on department scope.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) or equivalent trauma certification – Preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 4 years of clinical nursing experience.
- Previous experience in Emergency Department, Critical Care, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Trauma, or Acute Care settings preferred.
