Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Engine Boss (ENGB) CDL a plus to lead a wildland fire engine module in the suppression of wildland fires and all-hazard incidents. The Engine Boss is responsible for supervising personnel, ensuring operational readiness, and executing safe and effective firefighting tactics in dynamic and high-risk environments.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and supervise a wildland fire engine crew (typically 3–5 personnel)

Ensure adherence to LCES, 10 Standard Firefighting Orders, and 18 Watch Out Situations

Coordinate tactical assignments with Division/Group Supervisors

Operate and maintain fire apparatus and associated equipment

Conduct briefings, risk assessments, and after-action reviews

Ensure crew safety, accountability, and compliance with agency policies

Perform suppression activities including direct/indirect attack, firing operations, and mop-up

Maintain accurate documentation and incident records

Minimum Qualifications

NWCG Qualified Engine Boss (ENGB) – current red card required

S-290 (Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior)

S-230 (Crew Boss) and S-231 (Engine Boss)

ICS-200 / ICS-300 (preferred or required depending on agency)

Valid driver’s license with ability to operate emergency vehicles

Work Capacity Test (Pack Test) – Arduous level

Current CPR/First Aid certification

Preferred Qualifications

Previous leadership experience on Type 3 or Type 6 engines

Experience in initial attack and extended attack operations

Knowledge of fire behavior, weather, and fuel models

Ability to operate in remote and austere environments

Experience with firing operations and portable pumps

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform prolonged strenuous activity in extreme heat, smoke, and rugged terrain

Lift/carry 45+ lbs over long distances

Work shifts up to 16 hours and extended assignments (14+ days)
