Job Summary

The Engineer's role encompasses a range of responsibilities within the MBTA. This includes developing maintenance contracts, specifications, engineering plans, and maintenance standards for various MBTA facility assets such as stations, administrative buildings, vehicle maintenance facilities, and system-wide support buildings. Additionally, the Engineer will actively participate in the development of capital improvement projects for a variety of engineering and maintenance initiatives. As part of this role, the Engineer will conduct comprehensive studies, surveys, and cost estimates for these projects. Furthermore, the Engineer will be responsible for assessing the existing assets, considering their condition, maintainability, replicability, and operational requirements. This assessment will guide the collaboration with management and trade staff to determine the appropriate actions, whether it be maintenance, repair, or asset replacement, to ensure optimal operational efficiency.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of HVAC systems and/or fire protection systems, ensuring they meet safety standards and preventative maintenance contracts are managed effectively.
  • Develop and/or prepare technical specifications for maintenance contracts.
  • Responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance aspects of all building systems including but not limited to HVAC, plumbing, building/energy, and management systems, ensuring all systems are maintained in first class condition.
  • Conduct periodic inspection and audits to confirm compliance with operations and maintenance programs including corrective maintenance calls, preventative maintenance, safety programs, or hazardous materials.
  • Identify and implement energy-saving measures within HVAC systems, such as energy-efficient equipment, smart thermostats, and building automation systems.
  • Review and/or develop Asset Management Plans and Preventive Maintenance and Inspection for certain asset types.
  • Experience with Enterprise Asset Management Systems (EAMS) or Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Review Preventative and corrective maintenance work orders, identifying areas for improvement and assets for replacements.
  • Participate in design reviews, project design groups and review drawings or specifications for Capital Programs performed by consultants, contractors, and MBTA engineering staff.
  • Develop preliminary engineering designs, specifications, and standards for repair/reconstruction tasks by internal MBTA forces.
  • Conduct site inspections of systems and materials to verify quality; and prepare required reports.
  • Responsible for supporting facility mechanical systems such as HVAC systems, tunnel ventilation systems, fire suppression systems, plumbing, and sanitary systems.
  • Provides engineering data for the preparation and review of engineering or environmental reports and studies.
  • Write memoranda, letters, and reports to supervisors concerning the status of engineering projects or problems.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner consistent with the Authority’s driven by customer service quality standard.
  • Establish and maintain sound union/management relations while upholding the rights and interests of management and adhering to collective bargaining agreements.
  • Available to work all shifts and locations as assigned or directed.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites and to assist at emergencies, service disruptions, and/or other events as needed.
  • Respond, directly or through others, and/or report to work for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Facilities Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Three (3) years of engineering experience.
  • Effective organizational, analytical, time management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Intermediate level skills of AutoCAD, Word, Excel applications.
  • Experience with CMMS such as Trapeze, Maximo, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and present effectively to a diverse group of stakeholders and customers.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license without infractions in accordance with MBTA policy.
  • Ability to operate MBTA Vehicles for the use of travelling to job sites when needed.
  • Have the ability to work any and all shifts and/or locations assigned or directed.
  • Be available to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week, 365 days per year.
  • Have the ability to supervise and work effectively with a diverse workforce.

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Five (5) years of engineering experience.
  • Additional years of Mechanical Engineering or Facilities Engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with public bidding laws.
  • Working knowledge of building codes and environmental health codes that may include asbestos, HVAC control, ADA requirements, etc.
  • A Master’s degree in electrical, civil, structural, mechanical engineering, facilities management, business administration or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Ten (10) hour OSHA certification.
  • Certification as a Facilities Manager or Plant Engineer

Job Conditions:


  • Ability to effectively read, comprehend, communicate, and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English.
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age, except if participating in an approved high school internship / co-op program.
  • Ability to commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
  • Ability to provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experiences.
  • Ability to work effectively, independently, and as part of a diverse workforce team (or supervise, if required).
  • Ability to uphold the rights and interests of the MBTA while building and maintaining effective relationships with employees and co-workers.

  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and / or medical Clinic screening, potentially including physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings.
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service.
  • Intern / co-op staff must be enrolled full or part-time in an accredited educational program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the entire duration of the internship / co-op. Additionally, interns / co-ops must have valid work authorization and U.S. Social Security Number prior to starting their positions and throughout the duration of their program.
