Manufacturing Engineer I – Tooling Specialist

The Manufacturing Engineer I – Tooling Specialist is responsible for supporting the full lifecycle of production tooling to ensure uninterrupted manufacturing operations. This role focuses on tooling readiness by coordinating procurement, performing receipt inspection, managing inventory, and maintaining tooling availability for daily production needs. The position works closely with Production, Quality, Supply Chain, and Maintenance teams to ensure tooling is delivered on time, meets specification requirements, and is correctly staged for use. The engineer helps identify tooling demand, tracks tooling performance and usage, and ensures proper storage, handling, and traceability throughout its lifecycle. In addition, this role supports troubleshooting of tooling-related issues on the production floor and drives continuous improvement efforts to increase efficiency, reduce downtime, and optimize tooling costs.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate tooling procurement, including identifying needs, creating purchase requisitions, and working with approved vendors



  • Perform incoming tooling inspection to verify conformance to drawings, specifications, and quality requirements



  • Manage and maintain tooling inventory, including tracking locations, quantities, condition, and usage history



  • Ensure tooling is available, staged, and ready to support production schedules and changeovers



  • Maintain accurate tooling records and documentation, including specifications, drawings, inspection reports, and maintenance logs



  • Support production by troubleshooting tooling-related issues affecting safety, quality, and efficiency



  • Coordinate tooling repair, refurbishment, and replacement with internal teams and external suppliers



  • Monitor tooling performance and identify opportunities for improvement, standardization, and cost reduction



  • Assist in establishing and maintaining preventive maintenance plans for critical tooling



  • Work with Production, Quality, and Maintenance to ensure proper handling, storage, and usage of tooling



  • Support new product introduction (NPI) by ensuring tooling is procured, inspected, and ready for launch



  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and internal quality systems



  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, 5S, waste reduction) related to tooling and material flow



  • Analyze tooling data (usage, failures, life cycle) to drive data-based decision making



  • Provide support during audits and inspections related to tooling and manufacturing processes


  • Assist with Design of Experiments to develop new processes or solve material and equipment problems.

  • Evaluate equipment and process constraints to justify capital expenditures including ROIs.

  • Learn and use tools to facilitate ergonomic changes.

  • Develop foundational knowledge of Equipment or Controls Engineering to develop solutions to improve manufacturing process performance and efficiencies.

  • Keep current on new and improving technologies and lead projects.

  • Understand and apply analytics to troubleshoot systems and machines.

  • Write simple procedures, work instructions and test documentation.

  • Assist in the creation of product documentation including BOM's, assembly drawings, work instructions and ECO's in a highly efficient manner.

  • Assist with new equipment commissioning, installation, and qualification.

  • Support Engineering to evaluate alternate materials.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to achieve results.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and collaborating behaviors.
  • General computer applications such as Excel, Access, Visio.
  • Basic CAD skills.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Engineering or a hard science field of study

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • Quality Management Systems exposure
  • CAD experience, preferably SolidWorks
  • ERP knowledge, preferably SAP
  • PLM knowledge, preferably Agile

Work Conditions:

100% onsite role based in St. Petersburg, FL; no remote or hybrid work

Production floor support

Lab work

Minimal travel (<10%)

Extended or irregular work hours as needed
