Position Summary:

We are seeking an Engineer – Additive Manufacturing to adopt, integrate, and innovate new technologies in support of the Defense Industrial Base. Under the general direction of the relevant Additive Manufacturing Portfolio Technical Manager, the position contributes directly to technology innovation, incubation, development and demonstration to advance current and future Advanced Manufacturing technologies and accelerate the adoption of additive manufacturing in support of the Maritime Industrial Base’s 1+2 mission. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Involved in day-to-day operations and problem-solving at the project, program, and portfolio level.
  • Responsible for the technical execution of assigned projects. Ensures that engineering specifications are met, troubleshoots technical issues, and coordinates with project and technical stakeholders. Capable of working high visibility, cost, risk, and critical efforts.
  • Contributes and provides significant input to technical strategy development and capable of briefing strategy on behalf of engineering lead/manager. Assist in tactical execution of strategy.
  • Develops and presents technical briefings and reports for technical stakeholders and senior leadership (director level). Develops other technical documentation as required. Able to review junior engineer submittals.
  • Provides Subject Matter Expertise for specific engineering focus areas. Able to lead engineering activities, such as Root Cause Analysis or Integrated Product Teams, and drive technical resolution.
  • Develops technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Fully developed solutions can be applied across division or larger stakeholder group and can be clearly communicated and executed to provide wide ranging or deep technical value.
  • Work is performed without appreciable direction. In alignment with portfolio strategy, exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives and approaches to assignment. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective, for desired results. Capable of mentoring junior engineering staff for development.
  • Guides the successful completion of major programs and may function in a project leadership role. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve major program or organizational objectives.
  • Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.
  • Ensures regular communication with cross-functional engineering teams to maintain an understanding of project requirements and specifications. Collaborates with users and principal investigators on design, analysis, application, and reporting of research projects; provides technical leadership and technique consultation.
  • Assists with topic research, preparing analyses, reports, and the preparation of materials for whitepapers and statements of work to direct funding of strategic technology investments.
  • Actively seeks out various educational and training opportunities to keep current and demonstrate continuous growth. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems. This could include attending and presenting at conferences on behalf of the company.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Able to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment, on a team and self-motivated to work independently.
  • Technical areas of experience should align with the technical Domain being managed to enable proper capability for performance review and coaching.
  • Capable of working closely with project management personnel.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools and other software tools.
  • Established technical expertise in the use of wire Directed Energy Deposition (DED) or Laser-Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) metallic Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes.
  • Understanding of traditional and advanced manufacturing methods, engineering materials, welding, and machining, with preferred experience on material systems used within the maritime sector.
  • Demonstrated strength in performing solid modeling/CAD, drafting, and GD&T.
  • Demonstrated expertise on Directed Energy Deposition (DED) or Laser-Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) metallic Additive Manufacturing (AM) development programs.
  • Knowledge of mechanical testing and characterization of metallic materials following ASTM standards.
  • Preferred skillsets:

o Failure analysis and root cause corrective actions.

o Hands-on practice installing and running part fabrication on metal additive manufacturing equipment.

o Statistical data analysis.

o Non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT/NDE).

o Corrosion testing for material performance characterization.

o Expertise developing and using material and process specifications.

o Experience managing the acquisition, install and operations of metal additive manufacturing equipment.

o Familiarity with Navy technical publications and requirements.

o Qualification and certification implementation for additive manufacturing materials and parts.


Education, Certifications, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Materials, Industrial engineering, or similar technical field related to technical domain category with:

o 8-12 years of relevant technical experience aligned to performance in technical domain specialty.

OR a combination of education and experience to be successful in the role.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a relevant security clearance.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.

Travel Expectations:

  • Expected travel: minimal up to 20%

The anticipated salary range for this role is $119,200 - $149,000 annually, based on factors such as experience, skills, required location, and available funding. This ranges reflects the base salary and does not include any possible bonuses or benefits. Actual compensation may vary and will be determined during the interview process and in accordance with applicable laws.
