Be the Engineering Leader Who Shapes Michigan’s Aviation System
The Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) Office of Aeronautics is searching for a bold, strategic chief airport engineer to drive statewide airport development and lead the teams that keep Michigan’s aviation network strong, safe and future-focused.

Reporting directly to the deputy director, you’ll head the Airport Engineering Section and oversee high-impact projects across the Michigan Block Grant Program, primary airports and state/local airport development. If you’re energized by complex engineering challenges, public service and leading talented professionals, this is your runway.

What You’ll Lead
  • The full lifecycle of airport development from design to construction to closeout.
  • Consultant selection, engineering standards and compliance with state and federal grant programs.
  • Budget strategy, project performance and delivery of special airport development initiatives.
  • A skilled team of aviation engineering professionals driving continuous improvement.
How You’ll Make an Impact
  • Guide local agencies, airport sponsors and engineering partners statewide.
  • Ensure Michigan meets Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) expectations and stays ahead of industry standards.
  • Implement and monitor the statewide Five-Year Airport Development Plan.
  • Keep major capital projects moving on time, on budget and aligned with Michigan’s aviation vision.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate through the maximum rate of the Engineer Manager Licensed 15 position.

Required Education and Experience

Education
Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.

Experience
Six years of professional experience equivalent to an Engineer, including three years equivalent to an Engineer 12, Engineer Manager 12, or Engineer Manager-Licensed 12; two years equivalent to an Engineer Manager 13, Engineer Manager-Licensed 13, Engineering Specialist 13, or Engineering Specialist-Licensed 13; or, one year equivalent to an Engineer Manager 14, Engineer Manager-Licensed 14, Engineering Specialist 14, or Engineering Specialist-Licensed 14.

  • Possess a registered professional engineering license as required by the State of Michigan.
