Engineer/Architect 3 (Engineering Manager)

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Central Design and Engineering Services is looking for an Engineer/Architect 3 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

What you will be doing:
  • Leading design and technical staff in preparing, reviewing and selecting a variety of design or engineering solutions for transportation related projects. Coordinating the units efforts with various other work groups, including consultants, project stakeholders, and functional support groups within the Department (planning, environmental, materials, utilities, right-of-way, etc.);
  • Actively mentoring emerging management candidates among staff, provides on-the-job training opportunities, and coaching staff;
  • Establishing scopes, schedules and budgets, preparing Project Management Plans, and assembling project design teams for multiple transportation projects in support of preparation of contract documents;
  • Responding to requests for information from the public, Department leaders, other agencies, and the Legislature;
  • Consultant coordination, including development and management of contracts for engineering and other professional services.

As a project manager you will be responsible for the planning, organization, and ultimate success of transportation improvement projects within the Department. You will collaborate with multiple functional sections within the Department, lead staff from multiple areas of expertise, communicate and inform the public of projects and progress, and coordinate with multiple federal and state agencies to bring together capital improvement projects in Central Region thereby delivering the mission. The working environment you can expect:
This position is lead for a team focused on Mat-Su area projects in the DOT&PF Central Region. The position is located at the Mat-Su District building in Wasilla, AK located at 500 S Seward Meridian Parkway. The Mat-Su District Office (MDO) space has been recently renovated and is centrally located between the cities of Palmer and Wasilla. It is also a short 45 minute to an hour commute to Anchorage, and is just a minute from the Parks Highway. This office building is generally comprised of cubicle office space, and promotes a team atmosphere of mixed discipline staff.

Office hours have some flexibility to include flexible days off (RDO's) and part time telework. Travel to project sites may be required for short durations.

  • Position requires registration as a professional Civil Engineer or Architect in the State of Alaska.

Minimum Qualifications

Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect, and three years of professional engineering or architectural experience (Engineer/Architect series), or the equivalent.

Special Note:
Note: Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
