Engineering Aides and Technicians work in a variety of capacities in the road and bridge divisions of Public Works.

We provide on the job training and promotional opportunities to work in the field of Surveying, Construction Inspection, Design and Materials Testing for road and bridge construction projects.

There are currently two vacancies. The Duluth position will be located at 4787 Midway Road in Pike Lake, MN and the Virginia position is located at 7823 HWY 135 in Virginia, MN.

The salary range reflected above is the normal hiring range for 2025.

The full salary range, including longevity pay for Engineering Aide is $23.74 -$32.89 per hour.

Engineering Technician is $25.34 - $35.40 per hour.

Engineering Technician Intermediate is $29.02 - $41.01 per hour.

Engineering Technician Senior is $31.08 - $44.20 per hour.

This position is part of the Civil Service Basic Unit Employees Collective Bargaining Agreement represented by Council 5 of AFSCME.

Distinguishing Features of Work

Engineering Aide:
An employee in this class performs routine manual and progressively more responsible technical tasks as assigned in the surveying, construction inspection, material testing, and drafting work of the road and Bridge Engineering Division. Duties include participating as a survey crew member, assisting in the inspection of construction projects, conducting routine field tests on construction materials, and performing simple drafting tasks in the preparation of plans and layouts. The work is performed under the direct supervision of assigned supervisory staff.

Engineering Technician:
An employee in this class performs routine technical and manual tasks as assigned in the drafting, surveying and inspection work of the Road and Bridge Engineering Division. Duties include participating as a survey crew member, conducting routine field inspection test procedures, and performing general drafting work in the preparation of plans, layouts, and routine application of engineering specifications. The work is performed under the direction of assigned staff.

Engineering Technician Intermediate:
An employee in this class provides work direction and participates in the difficult and responsible drafting, surveying, and inspection work of the Road and Bridge Engineering Division. The type of engineering assignments reserved to this, or higher Engineering Technician classes are primarily determined by the expertise and latitude of freedom required to make final procedural or technical decision in the field. Duties may include directing a survey crew on routine as well as more difficult surveying assignments, conducting street and plant inspections on construction projects, and performing skilled drafting work with responsibility for the application of routine design standards and specifications in developing road and bridge plans. The work is performed under the direction of assigned staff.

Engineering Technician Senior:
An employee in this class serves as project engineering supervisor in the plan development, survey and inspection phases of road and bridge construction projects. Duties include directing the drafting assignments performed by Engineering Technician staff and performing the more difficult application of road engineering design standards, directing the engineering and inspection activities on assigned road and bridge construction projects; and serving as the lead worker of survey parties conducting complex surveying assignments. Assignments are received with general parameters of projects defined and are subject to established engineering policies, procedures and design criteria. The work is performed under the general direction of assigned staff.

Work Environment

These work environment factors are general in nature and may vary depending on the specific position being filled. CONSTANT: Hear within 5 feet and up to 20 feet; handle; exposure to weather; moving objects; traffic; and walk outside. Selection Process

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Engineering Aide: (Pass/Fail):


  • Graduation from High School or its equivalent
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Engineering Technician (Pass/Fail):
  • Two (2) years of full-time paid experience in civil engineering technology; OR two (2) years of post-secondary education from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering technology or a related field; OR equivalent education/experience as determined by the Director of Human Resources and Administration
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Engineering Technician Intermediate (Pass/Fail):
  • Three years of full-time paid verifiable experience in civil engineering technology; OR one (1) year of full-time paid verifiable experience in civil engineering technology AND two (2) years of post-secondary education from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering technology or a closely related field; OR equivalent education/experience as determined by the Director of Human Resources and Administration
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Engineering Technician Senior (Pass/Fail):
  • Six (6) years of full-time paid verifiable experience in civil engineering technology; OR four (4) years of paid verifiable experience in civil engineering technology AND two (2) years of post-secondary education from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering technology or a related field; OR equivalent education/experience as determined by the Director of Human Resources and Administration.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Note: At the discretion of the hiring authority, the successful candidate may be considered for appointment at the Engineering Aide, Engineering Technician, Engineering Technician Intermediate or Engineering Technician Senior, contingent on minimum qualifications, training, education and experience. This would be determined at the time a job offer is extended.
