Description of Work

The Photogrammetry Unit acquires aerial imagery and generates geospatial information products used for transportation planning, design, and construction. It uses advanced technology to obtain reliable information on the environment by recording, interpreting, and measuring remotely sensed data. The unit also partners with other government agencies for statewide orthophotography and aerial LiDAR elevation data programs, serving as NCDOT's subject matter experts for aerial surveying.

We are looking for an Engineering Technician III who can provide:
  • Advanced level technical support for the planning and production of photogrammetric mapping for functional design, preliminary design, final design.
  • Digital mission support files, film image scanning, digital image plotting, image processing.
  • Calculation of construction earthwork pay quantities.

In this role you will:

  • Operate photogrammetric mapping hardware and software to stereoscopically view digital aerial imagery and compile planimetric mapping and terrain elevation data.
  • Review consultant and in-house produced planimetric mapping, terrain elevation data, and orthoimagery, and identify discrepancies to engineering staff.
  • Generate orthoimagery from individual frame imagery using photogrammetric mapping software programs.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade: NC11 Salary Range: $43,738.00-$76,542.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the concepts, practices, and theories of professional transportation and geomatics engineering used in photogrammetry, conventional surveying, LiDAR surveying, GPS surveying and GIS as related to highway location, design, and construction.
  • Experience using and operating photogrammetric mapping software and equipment used to generate planimetric mapping, and terrain elevation data.
  • Experience reviewing planimetric mapping, terrain elevation data, and orthoimagery, and identifying discrepancies to engineering staff.
  • Experience expressing technical facts and maintaining records and work-specific notes in a clear, concise, and organized manner.
  • Demonstrated ability perceiving overlapping aerial imagery stereoscopically in three dimensions and interpreting planimetric and terrain features relatively correct.

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
