Engineering Technician - IV

Job Description:

Performs non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity, using operational precedents which are not fully applicable.

Such assignments, which are typically parts of broader assignments, are screened to eliminate unusual design problems. May also plan such assignments. Receives technical advice from supervisor or engineer; work is reviewed for technical adequacy (or conformity with instructions).

May be assisted by lower level technicians and have frequent contact with professionals and others within the establishment.

Typical duties and responsibilities: Performs one or a combination of such typical duties
as:
1. Develops or reviews designs by extracting and analyzing a variety of engineering data. Applies conventional engineering practices to develop, prepare, or recommend schematics, designs, specifications, electrical drawings, and parts lists. Examples of designs include:
a. Detailed circuit diagrams;
b. Hardware fittings or test equipment involving a variety of mechanisms;
c. Conventional piping systems; and
d. Building site layouts.

2. Conducts tests or experiments requiring selection and adaptation or modification of a wide variety of critical test equipment and test procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records data, measures and records problems of significant complexity that sometimes require resolution at a higher level; and analyzes data and prepares test reports.

3. Applies methods outlined by others to limited segments of research and development projects; constructs experimental or prototype models to meet engineering requirements; conducts tests or experiments and redesigns as necessary; and records and evaluates data and reports findings.

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

Due to customer requirements, U.S Citizenship is required.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoW Security Clearance for duration of employment.

Adequate experience performing the duties of the labor category as described in the Department of Labor functional description.

At least four (4) years of practical experience, to include laboratory testing, manufacturing, or maintenance.

Experience may include technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems.

Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as:

Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes.
Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated.

Engineering technicians may be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, an organization sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Certification by the Institute will be helpful as a measure of the technician's quality of experience.

Required Experience:
  • Working with manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, welding etc.

  • Planning entire scope of manufacturing process.

  • Purchasing tools and material in support of building hardware in a machine shop.

  • Fundamentals of project management. Able to monitor schedule, cost and quality of manufactured hardware and report to customers on status of deliverables.

  • Reading drawings, schematics, and customer requirements.

  • Working within a Quality Management System (QMS)

  • Estimating manufacturing process times.

  • Experience in Microsoft software applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Project.


  • Salary: the expected pay range for this position is $62,296 to $91,520 but is subject to change.
