GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Providence Public Library (PPL) is currently seeking an instructor for our English for Teens program. The Beginner Level English for Teens Summer Program Instructor will provide instruction and learning support for English language acquisition to high-school-aged youth who are new to RI and have Beginner level English proficiency. The instructor will collaborate closely with teen services, literacy education staff, and a university student intern to implement a summer learning program meeting the needs of multilingual youth in our community.

The program runs Monday - Thursday 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, July 7th - 31st. This consists of 30 instructional hours, 30 planning hours, plus 4 training hours at Providence Public Library - 150 Empire St, Providence, RI. The Instructor must be available for all dates and times listed above.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The objective of this position is to fill a gap in services for English Language Learner/multilingual youth enrolled in RI K-12 schools. It provides academic support and mentoring to youth over their summer vacation, better positioning them to start the next school year in September. The program schedule is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings (except for Monday July 6, when the library is closed). During the program period from July 7 -July 30 (four weeks), the instructor will lead 2-hour learning groups for one cohort, four times a week to increase students’ reading and speaking proficiency in English, and support teens in building confidence.

Required qualifications: warm and welcoming approach to communication and building connection with multilingual youth regardless of languages spoken; experience working with English Language Learners/multilingual learners; experience with curriculum planning and implementation. Experience with language learning, and working with diverse populations is strongly preferred. Fluency in another language (Spanish, Portuguese, French, or other) preferred. Must have no record on a RI state background check.

  • Presents a positive image of the library to the community;
  • Other responsibilities as required for the success of the program.

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING

  • Ability to use collaboration tools such as Google Drive;
  • Experience teaching ESOL is preferred;
  • Experience working with teens is a plus (not required).

COMPENSATION

$25/hr (includes 30 hours class time and 30 hours preparation time, and 4 hours training)
