Introduction:

The Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) recognizes the importance of language proficiency in advancing academic learning, professional communication, and research dissemination. To strengthen this area, AKU-IED seeks to engage an English Language Faculty with a broader interest in language teaching and research who will not only deliver high-quality teaching but also support the integration of language development into academic and professional development programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching:

  • Design, plan, and deliver high-quality courses in English language and language pedagogy for degree programmes.
  • Collaborate with the Professional Development Centres (PDCs) of the AKU-IED to design and facilitate workshops, short courses, and certificate programmes for in-service teachers and education professionals in the area of English language.
  • Guide B.Ed. students in English lesson for effective planning and conduct practicum observations in schools.

Supervision and Academic Mentoring:

  • Supervise B.Ed., MPhil and PhD students conducting research in English language teaching, literacy development, or aligned fields.
  • Provide academic mentoring to postgraduate students to strengthen their scholarly writing, presentation, and research dissemination skills.

Research and Scholarship:

  • Undertake research on English language teaching and learning across formal and informal setting, contributing to knowledge generating and improvised practice in the field.
  • Publish research in reputable journals and present findings at conferences, seminars and academic forums at national and international levels.
  • Seek external funding and collaborative research opportunities that support the Institute’s academic and strategic priorities.

Contribution to Development Projects:

  • Offer expertise in technical and pedagogical support in English language components of institutional and donor-funded development projects.
  • Develop resource materials, teacher guides, training modules and other project as part of deliverables.

Institutional Service and Collaboration:

  • Actively participate in departmental and institutional committees, meetings, and initiatives that foster academic excellence and innovation.
  • Collaborate with other faculty members, research units, and external partners to advance interdisciplinary projects and support institutional objectives.

Reporting & Coordination:

  • Report to: Dean, AKU-IED (or designated lead),
  • The faculty will coordinate with academic and administrative teams to ensure smooth execution of teaching, research, and departmental activities.

Requirement:

The ideal candidate will have qualification and experience in linguistics, teaching of the English language and supporting student-teachers in practicums.

Education:

  • Preferably, Bachelors in Linguistics with a degree in Education or cognate discipline.
  • B.Ed. or reputable teaching qualification will be advantageous.

Experience:

  • Proven track record of teaching English language/academic writing at university/college level (preferably with experience of teaching B.Ed. students or similar teacher education programs).
  • Experience in curriculum design, research, and research supervision.
  • Familiarity with modern teaching technologies and online learning platforms.

Skills:

  • Excellent command of English language.
  • Strong instructional, facilitation, and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to adapt teaching styles to diverse learners.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
