Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. The Piedmont Health District proudly serves 7 counties and the local health departments within, including Prince Edward, Amelia, Nottoway, Lunenburg, Charlotte, Buckingham and Cumberland. The position advertised is home-based at the Lunenburg County Health Department but requires travel throughout the 7 counties in the district. A valid state driver's license is required to operate a state vehicle or a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency. Mileage will be reimbursed per the standard mileage rate.
Environmental Health Specialists perform environmental health duties in areas such as on-site soils evaluation, private well inspection, rabies abatement, communicable disease investigation, migrant labor camp inspection, and investigation of general environmental complaints.
In order to occupy the Environmental Health Specialist Senior position, the individual must already have and maintain credentials as DPOR Conventional Onsite Soil Evaluator (COSE) / DPOR Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator (AOSE) to serve at the senior-level. If the individual does not already have the credentials to occupy the senior-level position, they will be hired at the entry-level and will work to complete training in the VDH Soils program. The entry-level employee must then be able to obtain credentials in the following within 18 months of hire: DPOR Master Conventional Onsite Soil Evaluator (COSE). Once completed, employees are moved to the Environmental Health Specialist Senior position.
