Environmental Laboratory Technician
Location: Logan Laboratory, 1620 Ridge Road, Building B, Largo, FL 33778
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Entry level environmental laboratory technician position performing various laboratory and/or office duties which may include: sample receipt, sample shipment, sample kit preparation, and basic chemical and bacteriological analyses on various types of water samples.
What Will You Do?

Receives samples according to laboratory protocols.

Uses Laboratory Information Management System to log samples,
-
Prepares sample kits and maintains appropriate inventories of kit materials.

Prepares samples for shipment to external laboratories following established protocols.
-
Serves as primary contact to resolve sample receipt issues.

Prepares reagents and media for chemical and bacteriological analyses.
-
Conducts basic chemical and/or bacteriological analyses on various types of water samples.

Cleans laboratory glassware according to specific protocols.
-
Performs sample bottle washing and testing according to specific protocols.
-
Maintains sample storage and disposal.
-
Monitors refrigerators, walk-in cooler temperatures, and ice machine performance.

Inventories stock, places orders, and verifies receipt.

Maintains and operates basic laboratory equipment.
-
Maintains various records, accurately and completely.

Adheres to all health and safety guidelines.

Maintains a clean, organized work area.

Serves as point of contact for recycling services and recycles containers as appropriate.

Assists analysts in the laboratory, as required.

May deliver or pickup items from other County facilities.

Performs other related job duties as assigned.
What Do You Need?
Please Note: College laboratory experience is not accepted as work experience.

At least 2 years of environmental laboratory work experience.

High school diploma or GED with coursework in chemistry, biology, or related sciences and one year of environmental laboratory work experience in a laboratory.

College level coursework in Chemistry, Biology or related science, including labs, plus one year laboratory work experience.

Associate’s or higher level-degree with college level coursework in Chemistry, Biology, or related science, including labs.

Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.

Full knowledge/understanding of safe laboratory practices.

Ability to perform basic laboratory analyses within specified protocols.
-
Ability to maintain various records accurately and completely.
-
Proficient with various computer systems and programs.
-
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment.
-
Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.

Highly Desirable
-
Associate Degree or higher-level degree with college level coursework in Chemistry, Biology, or related science AND one (1) year of laboratory work experience, excluding laboratory work related to college classes.

Experience in working in an environmental laboratory.

Knowledge of drinking water and wastewater systems and treatment.

Knowledge of environmental impacts on waters.
-
Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.

Ability to multi-task.

Ability to meet deadlines consistently.
